Surgery day--what to take with me?

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is coming up 6/26/13

Im curious as to what I should take with me...

What should I pack in my overnight bag?

I know I need Gas X strips and my cellphone/charger...

What about toiletries?

What should I wear? A comfy summer dress? or just yoga pant and t shirt?

I would love some feedback!

Thanks

I packed some jammies, t-shirts and shorts and didn't use any of them. It was easier just wearing the nightgown provided by the hospital. I did bring my own toiletries but everything was furnished by the hospital so I didn't need to. Might want to ask the nurse who calls you to pre-register what is provided in the room. I read on here to bring chapstick so I did but didn't really need it. Baby wipes were nice as I could use them to clean up. And, definitely phone and charger - I didn't need much other than that. Good luck!!!

I too brought a bunch of clothes because I wasnt sure if id be hot or cold and I just wore the gown the entire time. When it came time for me to walk around I was glad I had some big underwear to put on...after the catheter was taken out. To the hospital I wore some yoga pants, a tshirt, undies and a sports bra and wore the same thing home, but had fresh underwear. I brought my makeup and a hairbrush because for me when im feeling like crap I like to look a little decent...I put the makeup on the next day (I only stayed one night). I also brought chapstick and that helped with the dry lips after surgery. Finally I brought an eye mask to wear over my eyes to block the light because I had a roommate, I brought headphones to block the sound of her hacking all night and the hospital gave me ear plugs...and the best thing I brought was my neck pillow...I used it when sitting up.

Comfy jammies for sure. I was so happy to get out of the hospital gown it was so hot and you will feel better when you are up and walking around. Good luck I was sleeved on 5/28 and love it :)

I bought a couple of maxi dresses at Walmart. They were cheap, worked as pajamas, and my tummy/incision sites appreciated the empire waistlines!

I did wear a shoulderless summer dress in the hospital... and everyday for 2 weeks. It was great! You will have monitors glued to your chest. This kind of dress makes it super easier. The gown is too confusing.

I went back to work at week 3. All I wear is lose dresses.

I packed some extra undies and a cotton leisure/sports bra that hooks in front, tooth brush, tooth paste, deodorant, Shampoo & other hair products, lip balm, socks with rubber no-skid things on the bottom, my phone & charger, & my kindle. I knew I would wear home the same thing I wore to the hospital -- loose comfy dress with an empire waist (I wore it all of 45 minutes on the day of surgery since I had to be there for prep at 5:30 AM -- it wasn't dirty!).

Turns out the hospital provided no slip socks -- but mine were cuter so I wore them instead after the nurses approved them. Didn't use the shampoo because I was too busy sipping and walking to shower (kinda gross, I know). For walking in the halls, I just used two hospital gowns, one forward and one backward.

The one thing I wished I had but didn't was a small firm pillow to hold against my tummy when getting in and out of bed, coughing, etc. I really recommend bringing that unless you know that the hospital provides one.

I brought a ton of stuff, and didn't use most of it. :-) I used the gown they provided, it was just easier, and I had a lot of diarrhea from the antibiotics I was on, so it was easier to have the gown. I did use the slippers I brought, and my own pillow. I also loved the sugar free hard candy, it was nice to suck on something that had flavor. I also took a shower the next day, so it was nice to have my own toiletries, but the hospital did have some there if I needed them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
