I'm still in the hospital. And I'm misarable

Recommended Posts

So today is my 3 day post op. My surgeon said he would be keeping an extra day because I can't keep anything down. And he doesn't want to send me home only to return to the ER due to dehydration. After the surgery it was non stop vomiting. Especially with the pain meds they were giving me. I have been walking around a lot since day one. But man was I feeling so sick and full of regret. I thought this was going to be easier. I can't even have Water without getting sick. This blows, so I have been on steroids to reduce the swelling inside my abdomen. I know this will get better. But I hate feeling this sick. Has anyone been through the same thing as me ?

You poor thing! My heart goes out to you. I wish I could give some brilliant advice, but I didn't have that problem. I have read others on this board who did, maybe they can reassure you it will get better. In the meantime, just have faith in your Dr. He sounds like a smart guy, if he didn't wan't to send you home only to return to the ER. Are they giving you anything for the nausea? Best of luck to you.

You need anti nausea meds ASAP.

All I can say is we are all with you. Luckily I did not have nausea/vomiting, but I am so sorry you are having to go through this!

Hi. I am a week and half post-op. I can tell you that I couldn't keep anything down for the first five days. I had loose, runny stools as well. My Dr. put me on anti-nausea meds and they saved my life. The dry heaves stopped and I was able to keep fluids down. Please ask your Dr. for some anti-nausea meds. Also check to see if the pain meds could be making you sick. Sometimes they hurt you more than help. Hope this helps!

I vomited twice while in the hospital - once when they transferred me from recovery to my own room and the second time on Day 2 when I was returned to my room after my barium swallow exam. Luckily, nurses instantly jacked up my IV with anti-nausea meds and I was over it. I *do* have an anti-nausea patch behind my ear...they put one on before surgery and I was given a prescription for them as well (they last 3 days, so I switched to a new one on Monday). I was also given anti-nausea medication to take orally as a prescription, which I did religiously until post-op Day 4. I'm heading to the doctor for my follow up today (Day 6 post-op) and will ask him if he thinks I can go without Patches now. Apparently, this is a common side effect of surgery, but my doc wants to make sure I'm not throwing up! I was devastated when I puked after the barium swallow (too much nasty liquid too fast for my new tummy), because I was then on "puke watch" for 3 hours - they wouldn't release me home unless I could prove I could keep liquids down. Thankfully, I did.

Essentially, make sure they're giving you drugs for this - while in the hospital I had both the patch and IV meds for it, and at home I've had the patch and OTC pills for it.

I'm so sorry. I'm actually on my second day now in the hospital. I have been having HORRIBLE abdominal and back pains. Everytime I get pain meds I get immediately sick and start gagging...haven't actually vomited yet, but been very close to! I was hoping the second day would be better, so far not so much. So I understand what you are going through, let's both hope for a faster recovery! No pain, no gain. Stay strong :)

The same thing happened to me, once they introduced Protein. I couldn't keep it down and they wouldn't release me until I could. I ended up staying a few extra days. I also had an extra amount of swelling and diaphragm spasms that made it difficult to breathe and swallow. Don't worry - they can't keep you forever! The swelling will subside. Are your nurses giving you liquid pain meds? Ask them if the doctor has ordered you any injectable pain meds. I prefered the hydromorphone injections over the lortab elixir because it bypassed my stomach altogether. When I did take oral pain meds the lortab was so nasty. They switched me to oxycodone and that's what I went home with. Don't be afraid to speak up and insist on something different! Hang in there.

I was sleeved on May 7th. I vomited for two days straight even on anti nausea meds and had to stay an extra day as well. It does get better. Be strong, you'll get though it, I've lost 50lbs since surgery as of yesterday. Its hard to do, this isn't the easy why out, but you can do it! Its with it when you see pounds falling off. Vomiting usually lasts 24-48 hours post surgery do to swelling in your stomach. I sucked on ice that's all I could do. Hang in there!

your surgeon sounds smart.... an extra day really now might save a trip back to the ER later . I got discharged (feeling great) and then the next night was readmitted through emergency dehydrated and nauseous...stayed another 3 days in hospital. In the grand scheme of things it wasnt a big deal for me, im nearly 4 weeks out now and feeling great! Hope your feeling better soon mate! hang in there:)

Oh my goodness, bless your heart.. I kept having the dry heaving and not actually vomiting anything out. But with the pressure Alone was awful. Other than that mine went fine and quick recovery. Just can't seem to get enough Water and Protein down

I have!! I am 9 days post op. I was having TERRIBLE pain after surgery, they had me on dilaudid for pain which made me so sick all I did was dry heave for hours and I even threw up blood which scared me to death , my dr told me it was ok bc it was a small amount but gahh those 2 days post op were terrible. Has ur nurse told you to keep alcohol swabs near? If you wave them in front of your nose the smell will help with your nasea. And hopefully your getting some zofran or phernergan for it as well. I am so sorry that feeling is terrible but I promise every day gets better. I am still struggling with little hurdles but I know we can do this!!!! Keep reading these forums and focus on the positive!! several weeks from now when you've lost a number of pounds and your feeling better you will say aha! It was worth it, I remember why I am doing this... Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you guys for all the encouragement and positive energy.

I was released this afternoon after I could take two bottles of Isopure. I feel a lot better. My doctor switched my meds. Since we tried the liquid suspension of lortab the night before . I had a reaction to it. I broke out had shortness of breath and I was sweating profusely it was the worse feeling. So he switched me to Tylenol with codeine except when I take it it feels like fire inside me. So I think I will pass on pain meds and let it run its course. I still have to do my shots to prevent blood clots and those aren't to bad. Day four four post-op :( I pray for better days. Thanks again for all the good advice. I truly do appreciate it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
