Indigo1991 1,612 Posted June 12, 2013 Am in NO for a few days, almost 7 weeks out from surgery, and looking for suggestions if you live locally for restaurants/cafes where I can eat without worrying too much. Staying in the French Quarter but mobile. Thanks x
newat52 1,613 Posted June 12, 2013 Stay far, far away from LaMonds! Lots of good seafood at the Market Place and you simply must walk over to Mother's. Mind your manners there and follow the rules, otherwise you will be scolded! Enjoy! Oh and at Pat O'Brian's the Bloody Mary's are to die for AND they have veggies in them. You did NOT hear that last part from me.
Who Dat 70461 331 Posted June 12, 2013 ACME Oyster House on Iberville Street (Not sure if they are sleeve-friendly at 7 weeks, but the char-broiled oysters are awesome!) or The Gumbo Shop on St. Peters (you can order w/o rice). Unfortunately, food in N.O. is great, hence part of reason I'm 5 weeks post-op (other part is no self control!). Indigo1991 1,612 Posted June 12, 2013 Newat52, won't tell a soul! And Grumpy Who Dat, I have noticed how good the food is and what I would have loved to eat in the past.... Good luck, lol! Thanks to you both :-)
Crazypants 36 Posted June 12, 2013 I was just going to suggest ACME Chargrilled oysters. They are unreal. 2 Who Dat 70461 and Indigo1991 reacted to this

Staying in the French Quarter but mobile. Thanks x I grew up in New Orleans - I do not envy you. I'm only two weeks postop and I'd hurt myself if I went there anytime soon! Stay away from Cafe du Monde. You may say you'll just have the coffee but no human in the history of man has made it out of there without having a beignet! 3 GirlOnFire, NtvTxn and Indigo1991 reacted to this
UEvrWndrY 60 Posted June 12, 2013 Stay away from Cafe du Monde. You may say you'll just have the coffee but no human in the history of man has made it out of there without having a beignet! So true! Stay away from the beignets!! I was there on a trip when I was four weeks out and ate at the Palace Cafe (fish with beurre blanc sauce omg best fish ever) and Mr. Bs Bistro. Both were very accommodating and had great food. Nice thing about the food there is that there is a lot of seafood and its usually places that cook more home style/elegant plates than you average Applebee's, etc. If you had been in the Garden District I would tell you to go to the Irish House. One of the best meals I have ever had. 1 Indigo1991 reacted to this
Indigo1991 1,612 Posted June 13, 2013 Thanks all. Luckily I like fish and can eat pretty much any of it. DonRodolfo, you are speaking to the woman who was in Cafe du Monde yesterday - and had a glass of milk, but no beignets!!! I am sure the people around me thought I was some kind of weird stalker as I watched them, drooling, while they tucked in :-( But as I put my my new top on tonight, three sizes smaller than 2 months ago, I forgot all about those tempting beignets - almost :-))))) 1 DonRodolfo reacted to this
NtvTxn 1,262 Posted June 14, 2013 You should be able to get a good shrimp cocktail just about any place you go. Sounds so boring, but I bet it will be good. See if you can get some gumbo without rice, rice seems to "triple" when you eat it....the roux isn't good for you, but if you don't eat it more than once or twice.....you can get right back on track. At 7 weeks out, you won't be able to eat much of anything anyway! Enjoy, I've only been once, and we parked in a parking garage and WALKED everywhere in the French Quarter. I am certain we did 10,000 steps or more, every day. I was at goal, and ate a little of anything I wanted, including one beignet, one time. I didn't gain an ounce, I'm sure it was because of how much walking we did. 1 Indigo1991 reacted to this
Indigo1991 1,612 Posted June 15, 2013 Made it to the Gumbo Shop as suggested - fantastic! Had chicken, mash and corn that was so tasty I was tempted to eat too much - but I didn't :-) Have also walked a fair bit despite the heat and haven't felt tired out. So a great trip to NO, the people have been great, have enjoyed the food and loved the music. Off home to Scotland on Sunday but I will be back and by then I hope to be able to eat more of the food, even a bite or two of a beignet :-)))) Thanks for all the tips and advice. 1 Who Dat 70461 reacted to this
