Second Guessing my decision!

Recommended Posts

I know everyone is different but I have a friend who had bypass 1 year before I had sleeve. She started out at 305 and got down to 260 and hasn't gone any further. She can eat 5 times what I can eat at one sitting. I am 11 months out and have lost 122 pounds and well on my way to goal. The dangers of the other surgeries are what made my decision for me. You do not know what your body will do with any of the surgeries so I personally don't think you should anticipate that as part of your decision. Look at the pros and cons and decide what is right for you. It is not a quick fix but a way of life for the rest of your life. I am soooooooo happy with the sleeve but others are just as happy with the other surgeries. Good luck with your decision, I know it will be the right one for you. :D

This kinda throws me because after all the research I've done it seems to me that sleeve patients loose more weight and at a faster pace than the RNY or the band and seem to keep it off much better! I was put in contact with several sleeve patients when i first started my research journey and they all lost over 125 lbs within the first 6-8 months!!

My mother in law has the band and is constantly going back to have her band filled because she starts gaining weight, I know a guy I went to school with that had RNY and he almost died, he has lost ALOT and I mean ALOT of weight and its been about 5-6 years but he's been in and out of the hospital with "stomach" issues and he says its a battle to keep the weight off. My aunt went to church with a lady that had RNY about 12 years ago and she's gained her weight back plus some! It's never been a question for me but I wanted to research all my options, I will say that since I've joined this group I've noticed several that have not lost as fast as those first few people I had spoke with but there is one factor that I don't know about most of the people on here and that is what was their beginning weight... This plays a big part and from my recent discovery while talking with my ob/gyn, if you weight around 250 or less you most likely will not loose near as much as someone 300 lbs or more! In those first few months!! It seems the more weight you have to loose the faster the weight comes off in those first 6-9 months!! Now this is not set in stone but this was my concern because I really really want/need to loose 125-150 + in those first 6-9 months! I am 340 lbs at last weigh in and 5 ft 8 inches tall. I have 3 kids, my youngest is 4 years old so I need this horrid weight off and fast!! :) I don't feel I have unrealistic goals and I really believe this sleeve will help me tremendously!!! My procedure is less than 30 days away!!!

I wish you the very best of luck!!!!

Yes extremely close! I haven't weighed in a month, I've been on a semi liquid diet just to get ready lol I start my pre op liquid diet June 22 and I'm nervous about it but excited at the same time! Lol I am just so ready for my day to get here!!

I guess I'll throw in a curve ball lol or at least a lot of people I've told say wow... I'm having my sleeve done in Mexico, I have caught a lot of heat over this but lol to be honest I really feel I will be in better hands with Dr. Alvarez than a lot of these Dr's here in the states!

I have deciede on Dr. Alvarez as a backup if I can't get insurance approval. Don't let them get you down! There are a TON of MX success stories and a huge percentage of those are Dr. Alvarez.

Oh I'm certainly not letting them get to me, I don't have insurance and the least expensive around here is $20,000 + so Mexico was my only option from the get go.. I'm actually very happy with my decision and I'm just ready to start melting :)

Good points. I actually went into my consult knowing exactly which procedure I wanted: VSG. I told him why' date=' gave him all the info I had researched which swayed me in that direction and that was that. For my husband, He recommended the DS and so I've been researching that. It has brought up this question of rather the restriction will be enough to get me to a healthy weight.[/quote']

I feel like you aren't able to imagine eating a small portion by choice. It sounds like you think you will fail at the sleeve because it will allow you to eat more. I understand bc I have felt that. I cannot eat too much. Sometimes I feel I have eaten a lot but in the larger picture I haven't, I'm just soooo full it feels like I had a turkey dinner an really I had 4bites of a sandwich. You simply won't feel like eating another bite after a 1/2-1cup of food. You may try to eat more and throw up a few times before you just know when to stop. I would say, for me, I felt I could eat a larger amount from the month 2-4 and after that, I am 5months out, my intake is low. I love it because I eat every couple of hours. It's no easy fix. You have to watch your diet because I could have a bagel for Breakfast (like I did today) and it a bad choice. It's all carbs and fat. So I like that I still have to control my diet and I know my weight loss is MY success. I earned it! You can do this. Let the sleeve do its job and you do yours. It's difficult to imagine but you just won't be as hunger and you won't be able to eat a lot.

If you love your husband don't let him get an rny or ds. Know that if for whatever reason a vsg does not work for him the option is still available to get rny or ds later, but the opposite is not true. Malabsorption is no joke. I'm not a med pro but the more I read about rny and ds the scarier it gets. I initially wanted to get one of those but after researching them and comparing them all vsg seems to be a great middle ground risk vs efficacy.

Thank you for the kind words! I feel great and have completed my first 5K now and am going kayaking tomorrow for the first time! This is an awesome life but please remember that the only way to be successful with any of these surgeries is to do what you are supposed to do! This means eating healthy, (which is not hard to me since my taste has changed and I can only eat a small amount AND I hate the taste of sweets now!! Yay!!) exercising, and finding things to counteract the emotional and boredom eating if you are one of those like I am! I read where someone says they eat every 2 hours and that is great if you are fresh post op but you have to switch to 3 meals a day and 1 snack when you get to regular food and it is enough unless you get your body in the habit of eating often and grazing. That is a real danger zone! My sister had it done 3 months before me, started at 394 pounds and now weighs 218. We have made sure to stick right by the program though, and teach ourselves to enjoy the things we can have and not miss or grieve the things we can't! Being able to live our life instead of sitting on the sidelines is worth everything and anything we've gone through! Good luck with this decision and just Celebrate the rest of your new life!!! :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
