"Don't mess with what God gave you!" and other crazy comments

Recommended Posts

So, how do you respond to the following?

"You could lose this weight if you really wanted to...you just need to have more discipline, not surgery!"

"You shouldn't mess with what God gave you - he gave you a big stomach - that's what you should keep!"

"It's all just a fad....hopefully, you'll 'come to your senses' before the surgery!"

"Why would you want to do that - you could just go to Weight Watchers and get the same results!?!"

I've had some strange comments thrown at me in the last few weeks - I need some decent responses to shut these naysayers down!!!

Fortunately for me, no one tells me things like that. I'm stubborn and hard headed and nobody can tell me how to live my life.

Just tell them this is what you're doing. You've made up your mind. "I'm sorry you feel that way and hopefully you'll get over it!"

My response was always "we'll thank you for your opinion, but I'm really excited to have this tool to help me but bless your heart for thinking of me" that tends to shut people down but I do live in the south and anytime u say bless your heart that signals end of discussion

I'm fond of "you know, I'm making the decision I think is best for me"...and then if you feel like adding..."if you don't agree then I suggest you not have the surgery"...and if you're really on a roll finish with ..." So just suck it" with whatever inappropriate hand gesture you desire.

I never gave them a chance to say those things I told them what I was doing and that was that. :P

"You could lose this weight if you really wanted to...you just need to have more discipline, not surgery!" You just need more discipline to stop wearing those hideous shirts... Ass.

"You shouldn't mess with what God gave you - he gave you a big stomach - that's what you should keep!" Pretty sure this 49" waist size didn't come out of my mom's va jay jay...

"It's all just a fad....hopefully, you'll 'come to your senses' before the surgery!" You're an idiot. Do you even read? Oh, you've got a little drool right there...

"Why would you want to do that - you could just go to Weight Watchers and get the same results!?!"

You ever been to a Weight Watcher's meeting? It's like a freaking class reunion! Every few years all the same people are back to try again because this time it's going to be different.

I've had some strange comments thrown at me in the last few weeks - I need some decent responses to shut these naysayers down!!!

This might not do you much good other than give a laugh... I'm just enough of an ass to use them myself, though...

Or...look at them and say " whoa, I didn't realize we were having a Freaky Friday moment where you got to have a say in what I did with my body/life"

Sorry, not my most helpful post, but I think too many of us have a default position to assume that we "owe" someone a thoughtful, respectful response instead of getting cranky with the disrespect that they show by even asking those questions in that manner in the first place.

These comments are obviously made by people who have never been morbidly obese or struggled with losing weight and KEEPING it off. Until you've walked in the shoes, you can't possibly understand the journey so don't let anyone discourage you if it's truly what you want. Is it easy ? NO. Is it worth it ? For me personally, yes, absolutely 100% no question about it . I still have a ways to go, but this surgery has already given me my life back in so many ways. Ways that I thought I'd never have again and I couldn't be more thankful. I wish you the very best with YOUR journey ! :)

So, how do you respond to the following?

"You shouldn't mess with what God gave you - he gave you a big stomach - that's what you should keep!"

"Matthew 18:8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell."

Gluttony is a sin, is it not? Seems to me a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy addresses it quite nicely.

Don't tell people.... Outside of those that are essential in my life (2BFF, spouse, aunt who raised me) I've told no one cuz they don't need to know. If they've heard about it or not no one outside that circle has let on to me that they know. I just don't feel like anyone needs to justify this kind of decision to anyone els.

My spouse HATES the fact that i'm getting this done. I've informed him that if he's not going to support me that's fine just keep the trap shut & don't stand in my way. BTW I'm using his insurance and his $$ so I guess technically he could have a teeny tiny say, but I don't think it's acceptable. It's my health, my body, my choice.

Anything you can do or say, whether it's humor or snide remarks, to get that point to hit home to all the narrow minded haters out there is fair in my book.

At the end of the day they're not the ones dealing with uncontrollable painful hunger pangs during each drawn out calorie counting diet. Or the guilt after that one slip up turns into a binge. Or the "about to die" feeling after walking up a flight of stairs. Or the looks from people that pity us & judge us in one once-over glance.

Please, even if these are people of authority or members of the family who think they deserve respect, I wouldn't hesitate to call them out. RESPECT IS EARNED & they aren't respecting your past efforts, your intellect, decision making skill, your judgment, or your struggle in life.

Sorry to drag on so long. I'm usually the one with the funny sarcastic comment, but this really bothered me for some reason. Like how dare they...

Wish you luck and tell us how it went!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
