Help! Diabetes and Pre-op diet!

Recommended Posts

I just saw the surgeon yesterday! He put me on Pre-op diet which consists of one Protein shake for Breakfast ; one Protein Shake for dinner and one sensible meal like a lean cuisine or smart ones!

Dr. had said this pre op diet is used to shrink the liver ...I am soo hungry...how am I NOT supposed to crave food feeling like this??

I am on metformin 1000 2x a day; glizpzide 5 mg 2x a day; Insulin NPH 10 units at bedtime once a day

Ive tried the two shakes and lean cuisine today; and I just feel so weak and light headed! I wanna eat a Peanut Butter sandwich so bad right now!

I need advice please!

You should read this: The pre-op diet is NOT a punishment ... it's an opportunity.

All of us who went through the two-week preop diet experienced this. Thankfully, it only lasts about 4 days. After that you'll be amazed at how well you feel considering how little you're eating. Don't cheat - it will either prolong how long you have to deal with it or bring the headaches, weakness, and hunger pangs back.

Hang in there - this is a good thing!

I'm on a preoperative diet also, I have a lot of weight to lose before my surgeon will operate. it's a long road for me. I am using the Atkins shakes and 1 healthy choice meal a day. If we go out for dinner, I have a plan of what to eat before we go and that's my one meal a day. It took about a week before a wasn't starving and now it's not a problem. My blood sugar is better also. I have been able to cut my bed time insulin in half! I know this surgery is a new life style that l' m committing to and this diet is practice for what to expect long term afterwards.

Just wanted to mention that my doctor took me off of actoplus/metformin while I was in the hospital. My blood glucose has been less than 105 (usually double-digits) since my surgery. Your mileage may vary but I'm not the first person that has experienced this.

My doctor did a low carb diet before surgery to shrink liver which is great for people with sugar and liver issues. It was totally Atkins. I would not been able to make it on shakes 2 weeks before my surgery.

Do you mind sharing with me some tips on your low carb diet? Im starving!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
