First consultation tomorrow. Nervous!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone :) This is my first post. I am going for my first consultation tomorrow. Any suggestions of questions to ask? I am pretty nervous. Thanks.

Congratulations on taking that first step. Write down any questions or concerns before you go. They cover a lot of ground. I wanted to know how many sleeves my surgeon had done and his complication rate. I had more questions but that's all I can recall right now. Good luck.

Thank you Elaine. I heard he has performed over 4,000 weight loss surgeries, and my family Dr recommends him. It's just a big step and my family is not on board.

It is a big step and its hard if you don't have support. Ultimately though, it's your life and your health, or lack thereof. I've told family members that I thought would be supportive and didnt tell the ones I knew would not be. I have gotten lots of advice and support here. We will support you.

My first consultation is also tomorrow. I was banded 5 years ago....and have lost 65 lbs. but have plateau'd for the last two years. I changed to a new doctor and found out that I have pretty much lost all the band would let me...so I am concidering this procedure. I am on my second band slip so I either do this or have it taken out. I am not new to the lifestyle change,..but I am still really nervous because I am alergic to anesthetics so alot of precautions and potential complications could arise. They have already scheduled my surgery 2 weeks from tomorrow...so I have little time to get that warm fuzzy feeling. Has anyone else gone from one to another like this? What were your results and/or complications?

Some of mine were: How many surgeries, complication rate, Laparoscopic to open rate (How many times he has started laparoscopically and had to turn it into a full surgery), mortality rate, recommended Vitamins, the weight loss he would expect from me, any recommended readings, websites, educational information etc...

ahsem2bme, I was considering the LB but after reading many people's experiences like yourself, I'm leaning toward the sleeve. I hope the Dr eases your mind about your allergies. I'm sure they come across this quite often and know how to deal with this. I heard a lot of people convert to the sleeve after being banded. As for me,My BMI is only 25 but have many health issues and am taking 4 major meds everyday to survive.

My first consultation with surgeon is tomorrow. He repaired a large hernia for me a year ago so he is already pretty familiar with me. We talked about the sleeve gastrectomy after my hernia surgery and now I am ready to go through with it. I started the 3 month medically supervised diet program June 7. Any words of wisdom? I have about 180 lbs I need to lose.

Thank you and best of health to all!

Wow, so many of us had appointments today!!! Mine went very well. He recommends the Vertical Sleeve over the lap Band because I am Diabetic. I just need to wait for my Insurance company to give the okay and for my Dr records to be transferred. It could be in late August maybe. I had wonderful conversations with women in the waiting room as well. Overall good experience :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
