Full feeling? Band Vs. Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I'm going to have a revision soon and was wondering if with the sleeve do you get that food caught in the back of your throat feeling like with the band? I can eat and be fine and then never fails with my band after a few bites sometimes I feel like food is caught at the back of my mouth. Different feeling from a productive burp. Yes I get that too with this thingy in my stomach. The band was great my first 3 years andI lost 95lbs. Then about year 4 it all changed and constant band issues with weight gain of about 45lbs and tons of throwing up. I'M TIRED OF THIS LAP BAND GAME!!

I am post op 5 1/2 weeks, had my band for 11 years. When I was first sleeved, I did not feel fullness, had no nausea, had no aversion to food, even asked my surgeon "are you sure you sleeved me?". I could gulp ice chips, Water, fluids etc the day after my surgery without issue and still can. I never felt full with Clear Liquids, never felt full with full liquids, never felt full with mushies... I was wondering if my tummy was just too scarred and numb from having a lap band and all those complications for 11 years!!! I didn't feel fullness until this past week when I progressed to eggs, tuna, chicken, cheeses and soft vegetables after Proteins. But, now I feel fullness after 1/2 of one of those little tuna trays that comes with relish and mayo I also add boiled egg to it (no crackers) and I feel full after 2-3 oz of chicken. My full sensation feels different, sometimes I get a couple hiccups, sometimes I just feel full, sometimes I feel like something isn't going down and its in the back of my throat. I ate my first Protein Bar (no nuts) yesterday and felt full, almost uncomfortable for hours. I hope this helps someone else because I was upset and cried for a couple days about it. At first I was dissapointed but I'm keeping the faith in myself and my sleeve!!!! Best of luck on your journey!!!!!

Thanks for your honest opinions on the sleeve after lap band. Sounds like your sleeve is starting to work. I just have so many questions and as much as I hate my band now it's still scary to make another decision about weight loss surgery. I just keep telling myself that the band was just a five year side road I took on my weight loss journey and I need to take a different road now and it's the sleeve.

I am 39 weeks out from my revision and I can say that that the full feeling is similar, still in the throat area but this is when you need to stop eating. If I eat slider foods I would more so have a pain in my stomach because I ate too much of it. This surgery will be the best decision you will make I wish you the best.

I'm two months out from my revision and not one single regret. I got really sick due to the band that I had for three years. I never felt restriction with the band but with the sleeve you know better than to eat more. lol I lost about 20lbs on the band in three years whereas I've lost 50 so far on the sleeve with no complications so far.

I was also converted 5 weeks ago from an 11 year old band to a sleeve. I have exactly the same story but different doctor. I also asked my doc if he really did the surgery because I has no difficulty with clears, full liquids or mushies. Now that I can advance to most any foods (following the rules, of course) I can eat almost anything without getting a clear signal to stop until it's too late. Then I get those sort of very uncomfortable hiccup things and am pretty miserable for the next hour or so. My daughter was sleeved at the same time with a virgin stomach. She has had all the expected difficulties at each stage while learning to drink and eat again. At first, like you, I was disappointed but, now realize that I'll just have to stick to weighing and measuring my food to avoid going over my sleeves tolerance.

I too just got approved for conversion from band to sleeve after a 1 1/2 of vomiting and swallowing problems. Like Pickel, for the first 3 years, I did really well and thought the band was the answer to my problems. But when the band stops working, it creates a lot of problems, as we all know way too well. Has anyone who has already had the revision done found that you slime or vomit with the sleeve? I really hope not because I've had enough for a lifetime! But when you guys say you're uncomfortable after eating too much, what does that mean?

Keep in mind that when you first are sleeved they cut down the whole length of your sleeve. This means your have cut thru nerves. You will think at first you weren't sleeved. Be very, very careful and measure out your food or you can overeat and hurt the sleeve (staple line.) I knew this and was still scared they hadn't made my sleeve right because I didn't feel full with my measured amount. I think it was about 6 - 8 weeks before I could feel full in the tummy. If I eat too much I now get the lump in the area about were banded

I had one stick episode, I ate too dry, to much (remember not feeling and not being able to measure at that time.)too soon turkey. That was the one and only lesson I needed to measure until I could feel.

I'm 5mos post op revision. And I think it was the best thing I've even done. I have more restriction with the sleeve, than I did with the band. The only issue I've had with the sleeve was when I started eating solids, I had neck/shoulder pain after I ate. That lasted for about 6wks. I'm good now.

I am being revised to sleeve Tuesday! I am scared that it will fail just like the band, but I see a lot of ex banders felt that way and are doing fine. This IS the right decision for me and I have to trust that it will work and that i will be able to use it as a tool. Thanks for the info on no feeling your sleeve in the beginning. I probably would have freaked out...

With my band, I often described the feeling as physically full above my pouch but no relief from the hunger sensation.

With my sleeve, it took about 3 months before I ever felt full. I was soooo scared it wasn't going to work for me. But after about 3 months, I now have a "regular" full feeling. No uncomfortableness, no weird sensations, just a full tummy feeling. It's sooooooooooooooooo much better than the band!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
