Severe Port Site Pain

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

It's my 3rd day post-op. Everything has been going smoothly so far - gas pain as expected (slowly decreasing,) soreness at the port site, weird burping episodes.

This AM, I woke up in excruciating pain at the port site. This is totally unlike the pain I have been experiencing thus far. I can't even stand upright.

There does not appear to be any new bleeding at the port site, nor pus, and I do not have a temp - can I rule out infection?

I am also worried that perhaps I have been too active during my post-op recovery - taking walks around the block to relieve gas, etc.

I'm also wondering if I might have twisted around in my sleep and pulled out the sutures!

I would really appreciate your feedback ASAP. As it is Christmas, I may not be able to reach my doc until tomorrow, and I am worried.

Thanks!

Some people have really bad port pain, have you been taking liquid tylenol?

I think that infection usually also causes a fever, so I wouldn't be too worried about that yet.

I've been taking liquid Vicodin. It helps to some degree.

I definitely don't have a fever, and the port site doesn't look swollen or abnormal. All this same, this kind of pain doesn't feel right. I have been taking short, steady walks for the last 2 days, and the port site never hurt like this. I really hope I haven't pulled any of the sutures!

Hi -I was banded on 12/12/06 and I am healing very well-but I too have port pain. It seems to come and go and tylenol helps numb it. I have been walking a lot and thought I pulled it wrong. I think this is a tender spot as there is a lot of healing deep down below the facsia. If it continues I would contact your doctor, Blessings, Monica

I was banded on Dec 22th and have been having pain right above my port. The port site feels fine otherwise. I'm hoping it just pain fom the surgery. Let me know if yours goes away? I think I will call the dr on Tuesday.

OK, it seems as though moderate port pain is normal. Very reassuring to hear from other people on this issue, as I was convinced this morning that I had torn the sutures in my sleep or while walking!

I am managing the pain with liquid vicoden. I expect the pain to lessen over the next week or so. Will update.

I too have port pain/discomfort. It feels like something is constantly tugging when i stand up. I'm not sure if this is normal but I have called the Doc's office to see what they say. I'm just waiting for my return call. I'll let you know what they say.

Take care all.

My port pain seems to be decreasing slowly.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of drinking too much too fast. Makes the port pain feel like a bug bite in comparison!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
