I'm about 5 1/2 wks out (surgery May 2).

People tell me I look good.

I have 3 garbage bags full of clothes that are clownlishly too big and I can't wear anymore.

I'm starting to wear clothes that haven't fit me in 4-5 years.

I'm sticking to my diet, tracking every bite of food, getting my Protein and Water in. I'm exercising regularly.

In short, I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.

But the scale won't move!! I don't get it! I know I'm losing weight. I can see that I look a little smaller. All my clothes and shoes are looser. So what gives? I had my lowest weight 2 wks ago and have put about 5lbs on since then... I just don't understand. Why is the scale being so stubborn??

And I'm not posting this cuz I feel so sorry for myself, I'm asking a serious question - How does this happen? How could it be possible that I'm shrinking but the scale won't move? Will I suddenly get on the scale one morning and see 10lbs gone?

On one hand, it's frustrating. On the other, I feel great! VERY confusing!!

If anyone has any insight into this phenomenon, I'd appreciate some info...

could it be your losing inches instead of weight? I'm new at this too but that's my guess.. your doing a great job!

I'm told that a stall is usually just your body catching up. You loose all this weight then you stall to give your body a chance to loose the inches too.

I must be losing inches.. I've never taken measurements, but if all my clothes are too big, I must be losing inches, right?

I guess I'm just a lil mad too because when I was doing my pre-op stuff, I was losing weight at a much faster rate... then I have this surgery to 'help it along' and I'm stalled out!!

I'm trying to stay patient, but it's hard!

Still having NSVs, though... like wearing jeans that haven't fit me in years! And I have gotten a lot of compliments lately... I'm gonna keep my focus and keep working on this! It will be a welcome and wonderful relief when that scale starts dipping down again!

When you talk about losing weight, what you usually mean is slimming down. But slimming down doesn't always mean losing weight. I know that it sounds odd, but it's possible to get thinner without actually seeing the scale move. Typically this is going to happen when you lose body fat while gaining muscle. Your weight may stay the same, even as you lose inches, a sign that you're moving in the right direction. But, if the scale doesn't change, you may not even be aware that you're getting real results. What helps is you have clothes that you know are getting too big for you. I don't go by the scale as much as a I do with a tape measure and a body fat analyzer. Both tell me that I am leaner than I was before. Either way you are working your way to your goal...good job!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
