When will I learn how to eat?

Recommended Posts

This is so ridiculous. Sleeved on May 27 and now last night & this afternoon and tonight again I only eat 3 bites and have horrible chest/ gas pain. I think I'm forgetting now to take the tiny tiny bites and to stretch the meal out for a half hour. Once it starts hurting this bad all I can do is take simethicone and lay down for at least an hour. I just stated purée on Tues so I was able to eat without pain two and a half days before I started messing up. I'm so annoyed with myself.

Any one with tricks or suggestions?

I was sleeved the day after you and you're on pureed already?! My surgeon still has me on full liquids for another few days until two weeks are up.

Are all foods causing you pain or just certain ones?

Do not be so hard on yourself. It is a process that takes time to figure out. I am 3 1/2 months out and about a month ago I stopped at McDonald's and got a milk shake by the time I got home it all came back up and I finally figured out that I am lactose intolerant to full fat milk. So it is definitely a learning process. Hang in there you can make it through this.

I'm still on Clear Liquids but my nurse in the hospital and the surgical tech doing my operation actually said they bought baby utensils. They said the size is perfect and helps you take perfect size bites. That's what I'm going to do.

You might try a baby spoon and see if that helps with the portion size. You will get full really quickly after you are first sleeved and some foods you can eat a lot of and will never get that full feeling, mine is cheese puffs so I just avoid then.

Thanks all. I did use baby spoons the first day or two of purée, I didn't even think of that. I eat everything out of a quarter cup measuring cup so I don't over eat and that usually Takeshita half am hour.

Don, yea my Drs instructions were full liquid week one and purée weeks 2-4. I mostly eat cottage cheese, yogurt or ricotta cheese but I have had puréed tuna salad and puréed sweet potatoe with no problem. Now today I couldn't eat sweet potatoe that's why I think it is the technique that is lacking.

I know it's still early, things will get better.

Hi I am surprised that you are already advanced to pureed foods. I was sleeved two days after you and am still on solid liquids and that is all my stomach can handle right now. The doc explained it like this, think of your stomach like a brand new baby, you wouldn't put solid food in for some time also in order not to hurt your baby. It makes total sense to me.. from what I understand we are severely swollen inside and that opening needs time to heal in order to let more food in. Just a thought.... and good luck!

I was sleeved May 16 and was allowed puréed food a week from yesterday. Yesterday was the first day I could get anything down without evacuation. It's my thought that you are moving too quickly. I was told to try one new food at a time. I do use a baby spoon and it takes me upwards of an hour to consume an egg or a quarter cup of mashed potatoes.

I tried Beans and they DID NOT work. Perhaps the sweet potato is too thick? I don't like sweet potato so I don't know what you would add to "water it down", milk perhaps?

I did decide to go back to what was on the full liquids so shakes, yogurt & cottage cheese. I'd like to have Soup but it's not appetizing in the heat.

I had thought maybe I wouldn't feel so weak & tired if I ate puréed food but it didn't help that anyway.

I use a small tasting spoon. I use smaller plates and bowls (ramekins). Works really well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
