Sleeved at a BMI of 31

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I usually lurk on these sites, but every once and a while I actually want to reply to a question, but I guess it's rude to do so without introducing myself.

I was sleeved May 30, 2013 by Dr. Ramos-Kelly in Tijuana. I had a BMI of 30.9 (Possibly lower, I stopped weighing myself, as i started to get worried the pre-op diet would be so effective I wouldn't be eligble for the sleeve by the time my OR date arrived.)

Yes, my BMI was is low, but it's been higher, and I simply got tired of fighting all the time to get my weight down, while always firmly staying in the "obese" range. It really started to suck that I was dieting all the time, but still couldn't wear a swimsuit!

I had been considering the surgery for a while, but I think the tipping point was looking at pictures of my mother from 20 years ago when I was at her retirement part a few months ago. I thought they were pictures of me. Then I looked at my father, still recovering from his 3rd knee surgery in 5 years, mostly required because he his so overweight, his knees can no longer carry him around.

I realized that I didn't want to be 60, and still losing this battle.

Morevoer, my sister's wedding is coming up, and I didn't want to suffer through one mrore event where I was ashamed to have my picture taken.

So I made the appointment, and off I went. I didn't tell a soul (and still haven't, outside of medical practioners).

My surgery went well, although I had a lot of pain immediately post-op, and I was up and walking around within 12 hours.

I'm looking forward to losing the weight. The pounds are slow coming off, but my clothes are already too big. Unfortunately, I had an unrelated minor health crisis yesterday and received 3 L of IV saline. Which only weighs 6 lbs, but somehow added TEN lbs to me. Now I have to weight for that to come off before I can know where I really am weight-wise right now.

I also have a reunion this summer, and fingers crossed, I will already be well on my way to stunning everyone with the new me!

So glad I found this post!!!. I had a lapband and now at 31 BMI and going to have a sleeve next year. I wondered how well ppl loose weight with lower BMI. How are you feeling? Did you sort out your health issue?

I was banded for almost 4 yrs and got my revision on July 16th with a bmi of 29. While I only need to lose 45 lbs, in the 2 wks since my sleeve, Im down 13 lbs! My family (not local, in another state) all wanted me to get my band out and continue losing weight on my own. I know myself. I know I can't do this myself.

Good luck to u

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
