54 and wanting to be banded

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone out there that has been banded at this age or older?

I'm in pretty good condition considering I'm fat.:)

I've always rebounded from surgery and such but my question is; am I just crazy for wanting to be banded at this age.

I've been overweight since I was 9 years old.

My husband isn't really FOR the banded but not aganist me doing what I want. He thinks everything will change. I guess he's afraid of the unknow..but so am I. food has been a BIG part of my life and his life since I've been fat the whole marriage of 35 years, which has been a good marriage. I wouldn't change anything other than wanting a LONG life and more engery. Wanting to be slim to run and play with my grandboys that are now 4 and 18 months.

Anyone?:help:

I don't think you're too old at all. I talk to a woman who goes to my surgeon and she is in her 60's. You want to do this for all the right reasons and your and your husband's fears are justified. It's the fear of the unknown. But since you have this surgery available to you just keep investigating it and asking plenty of questions. Good luck on whatever you chose to do.

I'm not your age but I say go for it if you are in good health. The band is great. I have never lost 34 lbs without trying in my life. Best of luck on your venture.

I was banded just a short while before my 62nd birthday and I was in terrible health and getting worse, almost an invalid. So it was not a hard choice for me....not much to lose other than weight. I went thru the surgery without a hitch, no complications, have become 100 pounds lighter and 10 years younger in just a few short months.

As you said, food was a major part of our lives....we never drank, danced, partied, etc....just cooked and ate and gone out to eat for celebrations and entertainment. That has not changed!! Only difference is, I can go out to more places now...I can climb steps, fit in booths, dress appropriately for nice places. It's all good!! I wish I could have made this change in my life when I was your age....I would have had a happier existance and so would my family.

Best wishes to you!!

I was banded 3-1/2 months before my 55th birthday. I was carrying 219 pounds on a 5' frame....it was exhausting me. My health was on the decline but I wasn't suffering too badly.

I went through the surgery with no complications or complaints....as a matter of fact, I worked the evening shift in my restaurant (a quiet one at that) the day after surgery. That was really pushing it but I got bored....nevertheless, it shows how quickly some of us older ones can bounce back. The only real difficulty I had was getting out of our waterbed so I opted to sleep elsewhere for a week.

Go for it....I love my band and if I had to do it all over again I would in a heartbeat.

Hello! I just turned 54 and like you I have been heavy all my life. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my tentative date for the lapband mid-January will become a reality! :) :) Good luck to you too!:clap2:

I am 53 and banded for the second time. The first time my band slipped; I had life-saving surgery for its removal, and as of Dec. 8, I am rebanded. I have never felt better nor been happier than with the band. I am healthy and feel years younger. The band gives me the second chance I need to feel good about myself and to contribute more to the lives of others because the positive energy is contagious. Good Luck, househuntress, and my prayers are with you to make the right decision for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
