Anyone being sleeved at Salem hosp in MA?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery almost 7 months ago with Dr. Benedetto at Salem Hospital. NO post op problems or issues, I feel fantastic. I'm 11 lbs from goal. The support groups are good, the post op classes (great team of RN, NUT & exercise physiologist) were very helpful. Good luck!!! Salem Sleeve Sister!!!!

Hi Tanya!

My Post-op is going Awesome. I had a wonderful experience at Salem Hospital, Dr. Benedetto and all the staff. Wonderful care. I came out of surgery (in the recovery room) with some nausea and little pain but right away they took care of it. When I was brought up to my room I felt awesome and felt that way since.

I'm on Stage 2 of the post-op diet and I'm getting bored. I am so ready for a piece of fish or chicken.< /p>

When I get my laptop back from Staples I will post my journey.

Thank you for asking.

I do agree with Oliver's Mom. The support you get at the North Shore Medical Group is outstanding. Anytime I have a question or a concern I can get someone on the phone or on e-mail and get an answer.

Salem Sleeve Sister we are!

I had Dr. Streeter! Ended up staying 4 nights because I lost some blood during surgery and had to have a transfusion. They are super precautious , which is good. The blood loss had nothing to do with the sleeve , or leaks or anything like that. As a matter of fact, when I woke up, I couldn't believe it was done. Haven't had any gas or issues like that. I've been walking and trying to drink lots of Water but it's hard to get it all down. Everybody at Tobey was great (except for my crazy roommate). Lol. Can't wait to start a semi- normal diet. Have my 1 week appt this afternoon. Please feel free to ask anything!

I'm sorry to hear you lost blood during surgery--but it sounds like you had excellent care.

Oh no, crazy roommate, that's one of my big worries! (Can you believe I'm more nervous about that than I am about a leak?? Yeah, I'm not right in the head, LOL!) How soon were you able to be up and walking? Did you have a lot of post-op pain? I've had 2 C-sections in the last 15 years, not sure if this procedure is similar pain-wise.

I was up and walking within a few hours of getting to my room. I was peeing every hour and every other time I got up I took a walk. The nurses ended up leaving my compression boots off because I was getting up on my own.

No pain. I had a block down in recovery and that worked great.

The pain is much less than a C-section. I was walking the next day. I just can't wait to get to the next diet phase. You'll do fine :)

I was walking around a couple of hours after my last C-section, so if the pain is less, I think I'll be able to handle it, although I *am* 13 years older now, so we'll see! Thank you for the info--it's good to have something to compare the pain level to!

I'm from Salem, but I had my surgery through Lahey Clinic. Thank you for posting about your experiences. I have some friends that are looking into the surgery & would probably be going through Salem. Lahey was fantastic, but I'm glad that they have a good option in Salem available as well :)

So your surgery is the 17th at Salem? Your body gets use to the liquid diet after the 3rd day and I was losing 1 lb a day on it. I'm three weeks post-op and I am so ready for food. Next Wednesday I can start trying fish and chicken. Yahoo!

Keep me posted and hope to see you at the support group sometime. I go every month and sit near the front.

3 weeks already, wow....

Yes, the 17th at 8am... Trying to prepare my house and get things in order.. I'm planning on staying VERY busy the first few days of the liquid diet so I don't stuff my face...

I'm sure you're ready for some food with texture. How are your incisions?

My incisions were all healed by my 1 week post-op visit. Dr. Benedetto just ripped the glue off. He also gave me permission to go swimming in the ocean. I was so excited. Now at 3 weeks they look great and very small.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
