I am two days post op. I am sipping on my liquids, not using a straw. I wait until the liquid hits my lips before drawing in. However, I still have air in my tummy after swallowing. I always have to wait for the gurgle to come up before taking another sip. It's uncomfortable and stinks. :(

Any advice?

I was having a similar problem when I drank fluids and shakes. I saw my surgeon for my first post op visit yesterday. I explained the problem and came home with a script for metoclopramide (Raglan) and it seems to help. I was able to get my Protein in and 1/2 my Water after taking the pill. Call your surgeon (if your post op visit isn't right away) and ask tell them your issue and see if the Raglan would help. Good luck!

I sort of had this same issue. I started paying attention to how I swallow liquids and I had to change it up a bit. I take a sip of Water. Then before I swallow it, I actually get rid of any extra air in my mouth first, before I swallow. It is a night and day difference. Try it - get the liquid in your mouth, then blow extra air out of your nose first, then swallow. My burping has been reduced like 90% and hardly any gurgling. Took me over 2 weeks to figure it out!

Give it a try - hope it works for you. it's weird at first, but it's become 2nd nature to me now, so I don't even think about it :)

You'll just get through it. I would keep doing what you're doing. Really small sips. My tummy felt like it was full of air and when I drank something, it felt like it was competing for space. It stopped feeling that way about four days post-op

I did give it a try, and you're right, it works! I'm pre-op, and sad to say that I'm a Water chugger. Big sips are going to be my downfall post-op, and air in my gulps sure won't help any. So, sitting here at the laptop, I took my usual gulp of water, breathing in as I usually do. The noise of the swallow was pretty gurgly--I'd guess post-sleeve, that would make my stomach pretty annoyed and noisy. Then I tried breathing out as I took water in, and the same amount of water made almost no sound when I swallowed. No noise = much less air in the belly! Thank you for this hint, kchristian, I'll work at retraining myself before I'm sleeved!

That's awesome you tried it pre-op! It's crazy having to figure things out as you go post-op. I was the biggest water chugger of them all. I used to drink like 140oz of water a day and it's killing me only being able to reach my 64oz goal a day. I feel dehydrated with my 64! When I figured out my "air" trick, I was able to get in alot more Fluid more quickly, so I'm really hoping to be able to get in an extra bottle of water a day, bringing me up to 81 oz. That would be awesome. The problem is now I'm back at work so I get busy and forget to drink! UGH!

I'm really glad if I could help you even a small amount. Good luck with your surgery! I hope you will love your sleeve as much as I'm learning too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
