Anyone have or heard of the insurance process with BCBS? I called member services to make sure it was covered and under what qualifications but I read other BCBS plans have required a 6 month waiting period!?! I PRAY not!!! I'm too anxious to get this done and not that I'll lose my courage in 6 months but if my mind keeps racing and obsessing like it has for the last month, I may not survive LIFE for another 6 months!!!!

I went through BCBS. The coordinator at my dr. Office was awesome. I'm in the DC area and they required a 3 month supervised weight loss. I had been attempting to lose weight through one of the diet program that offer phentremine/hgc prior to considering the sleeve. I contacted them for my records and was approved in less than a week.

I have bcbs nj. Just started the process. I have to do 3 months of a program thru Vanderbilt.

I am still early in my process... I have scheduled my consult and one of the support group meeting this particular doctor requires attended... I am tempted to schedule a future appt with my PCP for clearance :-) but they get you in pretty quickly anyway so I have no worries for that. I just really want to get this started by sept/oct!

I also have BCBSNJ. When I started the process, last July, there was a 6 month supervised diet. But two weeks after that was changed and no longer required. I do know that some requirements are different within the BCBS system. They did not want to give me that information, I had to have my surgical coordinator find out. I would say unless you are getting straight answers from the insurance company, then the coordinator is a good place to start. Even if it is 3 months, you can be getting your other testing out of the way. It will go by very quickly. Good luck!!

I've been on Phentermine since January (no results although it DEF suppresses my hunger). I've tried so many diets over the years :-( 3 months I can deal with!

Me too! I figure its gonna take a little longer than 3 months till surgery. I just can't fall below 35 bmi.

I can DEFINITELY deal with 3 months! I probably should stop stressing and let the providers guide me... :-)

Hi Dignity,

I was trying to loose weight by exercise and diet. And I informed her how I was still hungry after working out (and by the end of my 12 hour work day). She suggested Phentermine. At the time my BP was stable without meds and I have never had any cardiac issues/complaints. It didn't make my heart racy like people said it would and it DEFINITELY suppresses my hunger. But I would only lose 3 pounds and gain it back.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
