Hello All:nervous !

My name is Hope I live in Charlotte NC. I am new to this talk community. I am currently beginning my journey to weight loss. I have been overweight all of my life. My BMI is 52. I am a Nurse (RN) I know how to lose weight and belive it or not I have help and encourged others to lose weight but it seems that this nurse cannot heal herself.:phanvan I am basically shopping for a surgeon that performs the lap band and getting as much information as I can about bariatic surgeries. I am afraid to have the surgery and I am also afraid not have the surgery. I have been bless so far with just boarderline diabeties and hypertension. I have quite a bit of foot, ankle and knee pain. So Motrin and I are good friends. I go to my PCP in January to see where I stand. The gastric bypass scares me and I am leaning toward the Lap Band.

If anyone has any advice, offer support, words of wisdom, critisiums please let me know. I wound be happy to hear from you

The thing with being a nurse is that you're trained to help other people - unfortunately you take care of everyone else but yourself. I was banded almost 6 wks ago and I shared a room with a nurse that had the surgery and she said that being a nurse made it worse for her because she knew what its like being on the opposite side of the patient. The fact that you are now seeing a dr. is your first step. It's okay to be scared - the more you read, read, and read some more you'll more excited and less scared. I, too, was best friends with Motrin so I know the feeling. Just keep asking questions everything will be fine. You're on the right track. Congratulations and good luck.

Hi Hope, welcome to the lapband forum. The lapband was the best thing I've ever done. I chose it as appose to gastric bypass because it is far less invasive. Good luck on your journey.

Hope, my BMI was 62 and I was using a walker part time and shopping for an extrawide wheelchair when I had surgery. Six months later I was walking a mile a day and felt 10 years younger. I shudder to think what my life would be like right now if I had not taken the big step.

And, yes, we professional helpers are so useless to ourselves....lots of fodder for a shrink there, isn't there.:phanvan

Hope,

You have come to one of the best places to learn more about the lap-band procedure. Everyone here is very encouraging and informative. As 'Shutuplena' says, read and read and read some more.

I agree with your reason to not have the gastric bypass, there are so many more issues with rapid weight loss and malabsorbtion (sp?). The band is a tool, a tool that can be a life-saver!

Keep asking questions, reading about the thoughts and experiences of those here and keep us informed about how you're doing.

Bill

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
