shutuplena 0 Posted December 23, 2006 The thing with being a nurse is that you're trained to help other people - unfortunately you take care of everyone else but yourself. I was banded almost 6 wks ago and I shared a room with a nurse that had the surgery and she said that being a nurse made it worse for her because she knew what its like being on the opposite side of the patient. The fact that you are now seeing a dr. is your first step. It's okay to be scared - the more you read, read, and read some more you'll more excited and less scared. I, too, was best friends with Motrin so I know the feeling. Just keep asking questions everything will be fine. You're on the right track. Congratulations and good luck. juliegeraci 7 Posted December 23, 2006 Hi Hope, welcome to the lapband forum. The lapband was the best thing I've ever done. I chose it as appose to gastric bypass because it is far less invasive. Good luck on your journey.

GayleTX 1 Posted December 26, 2006 Hope, my BMI was 62 and I was using a walker part time and shopping for an extrawide wheelchair when I had surgery. Six months later I was walking a mile a day and felt 10 years younger. I shudder to think what my life would be like right now if I had not taken the big step. And, yes, we professional helpers are so useless to ourselves....lots of fodder for a shrink there, isn't there.:phanvan

I am afraid to have the surgery and I am also afraid not have the surgery. The gastric bypass scares me and I am leaning toward the Lap Band. Hope, You have come to one of the best places to learn more about the lap-band procedure. Everyone here is very encouraging and informative. As 'Shutuplena' says, read and read and read some more. I agree with your reason to not have the gastric bypass, there are so many more issues with rapid weight loss and malabsorbtion (sp?). The band is a tool, a tool that can be a life-saver! Keep asking questions, reading about the thoughts and experiences of those here and keep us informed about how you're doing. Bill
