I had thought about having this surgery about two years ago. I decided then i was almost 50 and just didnt care anymore. I have always been fat. I did lose 100 on the lapband but that still left me at just under 300. I fought depression my entire adult life and while i am not suicidal i just didn't care if the end came. Flash forward a year. Hubby has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He's on chemo but this is not a fight we are going to win though we continue to fight. He has treated me like a princess for 25 years. Im so out of shape the process of buying groceries kills me. Recently we ran into a friend that was sleeved about the time hubby was diagnosed in September. She is now a size 4 down from a size 28/30. It made me start thinking. Before i just assumed if i died hubby would be there for kids and grandchild. Now I'm facing a life where i have to be it All and live along time. I just can't do it at my current weight and health. I have tried to imagine what i want my life to be like and i can't travel explore and go on adventures when i cant even buy groceries.

The way I am looking at it is this: When you have a diseased appendix, you have it removed. When your gallbladder is full of gallstones and the only way to solve the problem is removal, you get it removed. I see my stomach as causing me a problem, so I'm getting a large part of it removed.

When the fear of where you are going is less than the pain of where you are, then you'll make a change.

If you are not ABSOLUTELY convinced that this is the right path, DO NOT PROCEED. Wait until you are.

For me, losing 85% of my stomach was better than losing my feet. After years of badly-controlled diabetes (caused by my out of control eating), I was headed right down the path towards peripheral neuropathy, and in a few years, amputation. 5 weeks after surgery, down 30+ lbs, blood sugar normal, blood pressure normal. AND I finally have a chance for a "normal" life.

Truth is though, as bad as my diabetes was, i was frankly just tired of being the fattest one in the room. Tired of diet failure after diet failure. Tired of my weight always being either on the way down, or on the way up (usually up). So I can't eat baskets of chips and salsa anymore, so what? I don't have to wear big girl clothes anymore. What a trade-off!

I just had my sleeve down yesterday ! Feeling great. Just a little gas pains that meds have taken care of. In the 16 hours since surgery I have managed to get down 3 Protein Shakes with no nausea! Loved my doctor and the hospital ..and mine was outpatient .

I am happy I had surgery. I had 18 months to work out my fears. I have now lost 84lbs in 5 months and couldn't be happier. Fear of any surgery is normal but the complication/mortality rate is so small you'll be cheating yourself if you don't. Good luck to all of you who are discussing your fears and good luck on your respective journeys.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
