tampa 55 Posted June 4, 2013 I am ready and financially able to do the surgery in Mexico. My only hold up is I hs e to apply for a passport. I can take up to 2 months. I thought a pass port was necessary to travel into Mexico. My plans are to fly to San Diego and cross over with driver from Doctor. I have seen a few posts on this board that said they used original birth cert and drivers license. Any thoughts?
Stef 264 Posted June 4, 2013 You can order rush processing for your passport application and have it in 2-3 weeks. http://travel.state.gov/passport/hurry/hurry_831.html
Mari_Sem 2 Posted June 4, 2013 The answer appears to be yes, you need a passport. http://gomexico.about.com/od/entryrequirements/f/need_passport.htm The article is also saying you can used an enhanced driver's license. We have those in Washington state for faster Canada border crossing. But they take just as long as getting a passport (you have to go to a person to person interview). Best of luck! Rox 200 Posted June 4, 2013 My hospital rep told me that because a driver is taking us across the border - and we're not actually flying into Mexico, that our drivers license and original birth certificate is sufficient.
JulieJ 24 Posted June 4, 2013 I got my passport card... (it's cheaper) for land travel only. I did pay for the rush and it took 10 days.
TexasMiss 314 Posted June 5, 2013 You can make an appointment at your regional office and get it the same day. Getting across the border was no problem (didnt even stop us) but you would have thought we had fake passports as long as it took to clear us to get back across. I wouldn't go without. I was under the impression you couldn't cross without the card or passport when I called and asked...but that's me.
Stef 264 Posted June 5, 2013 The US State Department's website says the following: Since March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including minors – have been required to present a valid passport or passport card for travel into Mexico. While your documents may not be checked going into Mexico, they will definitely be checked coming back and you will need something that proves you are a citizen before you are granted re-entry. azheavensent 11 Posted June 5, 2013 For driving across you only need the passport card, mine I only took 3 weeks without rush processing.
Rox 200 Posted June 6, 2013 After reading the posts and realizing that when I lose the weight I might want to travel (since my a$$ will fit into 1 seat) My husband and I will get the passports - we can get them right at our small town Post Office

I have seen a few posts on this board that said they used original birth cert and drivers license. Any thoughts? I just came back from Tijuana on Monday June 3rd. When my husband and I applied for our passports, it took us exactly two weeks to receive them without expediting! Just make sure when you apply, you have everything filled out correctly because that could slow it down. Also, we didn't need them going into Mexico, but leaving we definitely needed them, they were checking. If you are going through a company that has a driver, you will really want to have your passports. Sometimes there are a few patients they will pick up or take back at a time. You would hate tp be "the one" holding the rest of them up! Good luck with everything!!!

mlecompte 20 Posted June 18, 2013 I got my passport card... (it's cheaper) for land travel only. I did pay for the rush and it took 10 days. Can you provide me with more information about this???
mlecompte 20 Posted June 18, 2013 Also I thought I read something about being able to get a passport within 14 days if you can provide evidence you are leaving the country within 14 days (not just the expidited)…I'm hoping to find out information about this again, so if anyone knows anything let me know.
