Stomach growling after surgery

Recommended Posts

I had surgery last Thursday May 30th. Is it normal to have your stomach growl? I'm not supposed to feel hungry but I do.

It's more than likely not actual hunger growling, are you taking a post-op PPI? That helps --Also your tummy will continue to make some serious grumbling noises for like the next 6 months.

Good Luck!

Does it go away by drinking liquids? I was constantly sipping during that first week post-op, so my stomach would make noises - but, it was not hunger.

My stomach made a lot of sounds for the first 2 weeks and by the 3 rd week it drastically died down. However, even though I was taking my PPI's 2 x daily I was still feeling hungry around 2 weeks post op. It was a controllable hunger though, not a "I can't stop myself... I am a like a horse with a feed bag going to chow down all the way to town" hunger. See, not all of the ghrelin will be removed from your body. A tiny bit may remain in from your stomach (depending on how your DR stapled your sleeve..sometimes this hormone receptor is not in the same EXACT spot in each person's stomach) and it is definitely produced by the pancreas as well. SO, you may feel hunger, but it should be controllable.

If you have ingested Protein and are drinking an adequate amount of liquids and are still feeling hungry, then chances are that you probably are dealing with Head Hunger, or a minimized form of actual hunger.

I also had a lot of growling noises but it died down after 2 weeks and now, it only happen very rarely, typically with vegetables like broccoli (more gassy).

You will get to know if what you are feeling is real hunger - thirst - gas - or head hunger. I was very lucky and did not really experience the "hunger" others have. I was on Prilosec for a month and have not had issues with gas.

Congratulations ! And good luck going forward.

What is PPI? I'm not supposed to drink over 4 oz at a time right now. I had a 4 oz Protein Shake this morning and have been sipping on my gatorade. Will eat my other half of Jello in a few. I didn't know if growling was normal or not, and I guess I just associate growling with hunger.

PPI is an anti-acid medicine, like xantac, pepcid, etc., most Dr.'s give an Rx for it after surgery.

Yeah, the grumbling does sometimes does make you think its hunger.

I didn't a prescription but do have some otc. Maybe it is just all of the fluids. I hear it and think I must be hungry.

Who said you weren't supposes to be hungry? I woke up from surgery hungry. I know some people have no hunger after surgery but others do. It doesn't mean anything is wrong. I've lost 140 lbs in 9 months so I'm sure my stomach is just fine. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
