Anyone feel amazing post op?

Recommended Posts

My only difficulty was some gas pains going into my left shoulder. I was exhausted some days but a good nap took care of that. By day 4 I was bouncing with energy. As long as I didnt' overdo it I felt (still feel) great.

I had a very easy recovery. I thought I would be the one who: had to stop the surgery because my liver was too big; had to be incubated after surgery because of high carbon dioxide levels; would wake up throwing up; would have to stay extra days because of problems; would not lose weight. Well, I had none of that. I had literally no pain, no nausea, I was giddy just to have it done and be on my way! I was sleeved March 11 and have lost 41 lbs, 60 since My first consult at the end of November. I am 66so I worried I was too old to lose, but things are going well. I had a stall at 3 weeks but just kept moving along with my Water and Protein. I would do this again in a heartbeat. Good Luck!

My recovery went really smoothly. Had surgery May 16th and I have yet to have any kind of nausea. I have had diarrhea a couple times in the last week, but that is just due to eating new things that apparently my sleeve didn't appreciate.

I remember I was CONCERNED by how good I felt after surgery.... haha. I still worry a little because so far I haven't had any trouble with getting any food down and I'm scared that means the sleeve won't work......

Obviously I understand soreness and some pain, but anyone have a really easy recovery? I'd like some positive stories! :)

I had a super easy time. I only took pain meds for ten days total and after being discharged from the hospital, I only took it at night. It was uncomfortable turning over and the meds helped. During the day I used Tylenol and a heating pad. I never felt sick, the worst problem I had was trying to get the nasty shakes down and getting enough Water. I started drinking the little 3.5 oz Protein Shots, not any better tasting really, but MUCH LESS of it to get down. A few sips in the AM, noon and PM, holding my nose like a kid and rinsing my mouth afterwards. Pretty easy way to get 43 grams of Protein. We went to Galveston the 2nd week post op and I am pretty sure salty sea air aids in healing!!! LoL I'd get out and walk on the beach a little bit and a little more every day. I was just so darn excited to have had this surgery, every day was a new adventure! I never regretted my decision, not from the time I woke up in recovery. I was thrilled beyond belief. I'm three years out and I still cannot believe it, I cannot believe how easy it's been. Maintaining for 2.5 years now. Problems here......not at all. I have a few things I recommend that I started at day 3 or 4 and STILL do. I weigh every single morning. I weigh and/or measure all my food when we are at home. I log my food on line. I don't always manage to "under eat" my sleeve, but I try, it is uncomfortable to eat 'one bite' too many. Eat a little less than you can hold. I eat off a salad plate and I use a seafood fork many times when I'm at home. Good luck, this is a wild ride, enjoy every bit of it!!!!

There is already a thread about this: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/47767-anyone-have-a-relatively-easy-recovery-story/

I posted my story there. It is quite a long thread, with lots of positive stories.

From the moment I got home from the hospital, it's been smooth sailing. I am almost 3 weeks out, no food has upset my tummy, and drinking has been easy. 63-78 oz Protein and 80 oz Fluid daily, no problem. Very happy with how things have gone so far.

I told the anesthesiologist before we went to the operating room that I cannot breathe when I am flat on my back. I expected to wake up in some sort of recovery room inclined enough that it wouldn't be an issue. Instead, I wake up on my back with my arms and torso still strapped down, me struggling to prop myself up, and the anesthesiologist yelling at me "STOP FIGHTING, STOP FIGHTING!!!" My memory goes fuzzy and next thing I remember is that I'm inclined, feeling groggy, with an intense gas pain in the front that won't go away, a slightly sore throat, and realizing I wasn't in as much pain as I expected. They offered me pain meds and after the first hour I started feeling better and better. My wife walked the first lap around the nurses station with me and I was able to do the rest later on my own. I had issues with oxygen and inability to urinate but the nurses kept working on me until I could. I didn't get much sleep the first night but I still felt better and better. I was discharged around 11am the next morning. Somewhere along the way the intense gas pain went away and turned into some soreness around my abdomen. The liquid hydrocodone helped immensely. I ran out yesterday and started taking liquid Tylenol and it's been all good.

I never experienced nausea even once and I had absolutely no pain issues with my incision sites at all.

Oddly, my sleeve doesn't allow me to drink Water too fast but I can get a Protein shake down as fast as I could preop. :o

Thank you. I've had 2 csections. I'm totally ok with pain. It's the nausea/vomiting I'm nervous about. My surgeon laughed at me because I'm not even nervous about the surgery itself, just the way ill feel when I wake up!

Hi Jessica Ann,

I'm so worried about the pain after too.....My surgery is friday!

This is a great post, Thank You!

My experience has been wonderful! I was sore for a couple of days, but felt pretty normal by day 5. Back to work after one week and no complications. I'm 8 weeks post-op and if it weren't for scars and restricted eating capacity I'd never know I was sleeved. I've lost 14 1/2 % if my starting weight and dropped over 7 BMI.

Had my surgery June 3, out of recovery and into my room by 430p. The night shift nurse did her best to keep ahead of any pain I was having. I found out at 4am that I hadn't asked for pain meds up until then. She brought me a small dose at 4am and another at 6am. When the day shift nurse came in I didn't ask for pain meds and got released at 5p June 4.

The car ride home wasn't much fun as we had to get RX meds. Anyway, I've been getting up every 4 hours of during the night to walk around, taking some liquid lortab each time. The only pain I have is at the incision sites....and even then it comes from using muscles to do things like sitting up in bed from laying down.

I would say I had a very easy recovery. Surgery mid day on Monday, left the hospital by 3:00 on Tuesday and never needed any pain meds after leaving the hospital. I should clarify, I didnt need them but took them until Wednesday becasue I was worried that he pain would creep up on me when the hospital meds wore off. By Wednesday I stopped taking the vicodin and never looked back. I was more worried about the dtrain than anything, that is what was sore and I was overly cautious with it. I never needed my nausea meds either and had no problems with getting the required liquids in either. I tell my wife all the time that it feels like it has been too easy from the beginning!

I did! I was amazed. I cant take narcotics at all, so I was worried about the pain after. All I can take is Tylenol and motrin, anything more and I am puking, even with anti nausea meds. I had almost no gas pains, I was most worried about those. I had it once or twice in my chest, but as soon as I got up and sat up I was fine. I was up walking around a few hours after my surgery. I only had nausea once, after my upper gi the next day, I got nauseated and puked once. In the hospital I only took Tylenol and iv motrin, once I got home I only took liquid Tylenol, and only for 5 days, after that I didn't need anything. By day 5 I was able to do everything I was able to do before the surgery. Bending over was still a bit tender, but not bad. I have been able to get all my Protein and fluids since the day I got home from the hospital.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
