Have to start my Pre-Op diet 4 months in advance..but not because of surgery!

Recommended Posts

So i was all happy since January.. I haven't had to worry much about losing weight. I am having surgery in October and so i figured "Eat the foods you wont be eating in awhile...sushi for example..(the kind with rice) or cake or ________(insert food here)

So anyway... I saw my Dr. the other day because I have been having lots of nerve pains and they ended up diagnosing me with Fibromyalgia and the Dr. had to run a bunch of blood tests prior to that, to rule out everything else...

Well..he did a full blood panel..and for the first time ever in my life..Out of being obese for my whole life...he now tells me that I have high cholesterol and my triglyceride levels are double that of a normal persons...meaning" there's a lot of fat in my blood" ...

So... he ordered me to go on a low carb high Protein 2 shake/ lean and green meal... with 1 cup of berries and 2tsp of low fat dressing...

And I'm like "RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" That's the diet i have to do 2 weeks prior to surgery....and now I have to be on that for...4 months!!!!!

He is going to re-test me in a month!

Yayyyyy :( NOT!

Anyone else have issues and have to go on a diet before their pre-op diet? How am i going to survive?????

It's going to be challenging, but if your doctor is demanding it, you just gotta follow through. It sounds like he must be really worried about your cholesterol levels--and that could definitely be dangerous. It's no good getting to October if you can't have the surgery due to serious cardiac issues caused by high cholesterol, for example.

I'd be upset and bummed-out too. It might seem like you're being punished, but try to see the positive side; you're starting early, so there will be lots of opportunities to come up with "lean and green" meals that you actually enjoy. I'm willing to bet there's lots of people on the forums who could share recipes with you in that area! Your health is so important--you're the only YOU you've got--and this dietary change is going to help reset all the things that went a bit wonky. Before you know it, you'll be sleeved, and your headspace will already be prepared for the list of lifetime diet changes that come with the sleeve.

You'll be that much more ready for post-op success; and that's definitely a good thing.

Hang in there. Vent when you need to, you're only human after all, but stick to the doc's rules. You can do this!

I started mine a month early because I was tired of being fat. I didn't want to get bigger before surgery and have more to lose after. I wanted to go into this as healthy as I could possibly be and I wanted to make sure that my mind was ready for smaller portions. I also wanted to find shakes that I could tolerate and explore options such as Protein Bars that I could eat post op.

I am SO glad I did. No food funeral here, I was not in mourning. I know that I will be able to have all my favorite foods eventually, as will you, just in smaller, healthier portionsand to be honest, I hope my favorite foods turn into healthier things. I mean really...WHY would anyone with any intelligence choose processed food to be a "favorite" when there are so many delicious REAL food choices? (I am totally slamming myself here.)

I lost 20 pounds preop and the choices I made have set me up for success post op as well. I am thrilled that I started early. You have little choice if you want to make it to the operation table. Rejoice in the fact that your condition levels were discovered before it's too late and start your journey to health now. You can't regret that, right?

You are definitely going to Lose a lot of weight Priya so just think of it as that... I have been doing the pre-diet for seven days and it is going okay and seeing the scale go down quite a bit I think I will reach my 15 to 20 pound loss by my surgery date of June 11... Good luck to you

I also started my pre-op diet early, to lose extra weight and to prepare for my new lifestyle change. It may be challenging but stick to it and you'll be fine. Good luck to you.

I started my shake+1 lean and green meal plan on December 1st in preparation of my march 13th surgery date. It was AWESOME. I lost 45 pounds preop and I know that the diet and weight loss helped me have an easier recovery. Also sticking to the diet preop really helped me be prepared for my new VSG style of eating. You can do it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
