Goal weight question

Recommended Posts

How did you determine your goal weight? I didn't think to get my surgeon's opinion pre-op, but I have an appointment next week and will ask his opinion then. I'm 5'1" and 199# right now. My surgery date was 4/23/13. My personal original goal pre-op was 120, but I think now it may be unrealistic.

My first goal is to fit in a size 10 (I'm 5'11"). I'll be happy with whatever weight that ends up being. I'm thinking it will be the upper end of the normal BMI for my height. I'm trying to get away from being obsessed by the numbers on the scale. I want to be healthy and fit.

I think a few things need to be considered in making a goal weight. . If you're fairly young 120 isn't a unrealistic goal. When you age things change.. No clue the logic behind that, but there's no way I could go back down to my early 20's weight. Maybe it's bone density, muscle mass etc.

My goal weight on my ticker is below my actual goal. The red number on my ticker is a caution number I don't want to go below. A healthy weight for me is 130ish. So.. Everyone's goal depends on several things

I loosely used BMI to help me. At 140 lbs I would no longer be considered overweight. My surgeon set a goal of 160 but when I see other women with my shape/ height at that weight, I think they still look a little pudgy. I also have a clothing size in mind- an 8. No real reason pther than it is a single digit. Frankly, I won't really know when I am goal until I get there.

I am 5'10" - goal size 14 - goal weight 165/175....I am a little older now, so as much as I would love to say I weigh 150/155 like I did in high school....I am built differently now. I have arms now unfortunately, my thighs are bigger, and my stomach has always been my worst body part & it is where all my weight is. I got down to 199 size 16 back in 2004 or so...so I am basing my goals on that and plus I get to go to WW for free when I hit my goal (and their goal for me is 174)...I don't give Mr. scale power over me, though. I just want to feel like me again & feel good in (and out! LOL) of my clothes again..when I do, I am good regardless of what Mr. scale says..

Good luck to us all with our goals!

When I was in college, I was a trained Peer Health Counselor. We did all kinds of health consulting with students and we had target weights for both men and women. Our guideline for women was 100 lbs. for the first 5 feet of height and then an additional 5 lbs. for each inch above. For men, it was 100 lbs. for the first 5 feet of height and then an additional 10 lbs. for each inch above. In both cases we could go + or - 10% for body type and bone structure. Keep in mind this was for college age kids. I don't know if the guideline would be the same for folks above college age.

I don't know if that is correct, but it has been my guideline forever and it happens to coincide with my and my surgeons goals for by weight loss. At the end of the day, it is your decision and only about how you feel at whatever size you are. Hope it helps others.

I'm the same height and that is my goal. I know it is a stretch, but I'm hoping for it!

I found this weight chart online which you might find helpful, it takes into account age which BMI charts don't. Personally I don't expect at 54 to be the same weight as someone of 24 (same height)

We are in the same boat. I had my sleeve 5/22/13. I am 5'1" and I weighed 196 my day of surgery. I also want 120 but at 55 I am not sure that is possible.

This is a question that I struggle with as I am way outside of the BMI scale thing at 5'11" and pretty musclular the top weight for my height is about 172lbs I believe I have more lean body mass than that. I'm at about 212 and have one of those scales that is supposed to estimate your body fat percentage. I'm thinking it's not very accurate as I get reading the same day of between 11-17 percent. So I'm at a loss on what to target for my goal weight...

I know that I want to get to a weight that I an MAINTAIN without struggling. I feel like if I get to what my BMI says I should be and I can't maintain it then I will feel like a failure. I set my goal for 165 - 20 pounds more than when I got married 20 years ago. In looking at the BMI chart that accounts for age my high end would be 154. Once I get to 165 I will see from there how I feel and look. I have always been "curvy" and want to maintain that. I like the look for some "meat on the bones." But I may try to get into the 150's which TO ME would be perfection.

Whether I am in the BMI range or not isn't my goal. If my cholesterol is good, my blood work is good, I am exercising and have a strong heart muscle the number isn't as important. No matter what I have lengthened my life by taking off so much weight and starting to exercise regularly.

I would like to thank UK candy for the chart. I am 5'6 in height and 46 years old. I know from the time I was 11 until after I delivered my second child, I weighed 145. At that weight I was wearing a size, 11/12. That was an alright weight for me but I don't think it is the ideal weight for me at my current age. I believe 160 would be a better weight depending on how I am satisfied with my body after I am sleeved and reach that weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
