My surgeon only does the leak test during surgery. I was kind of disappointed when I found out he wouldnt be doing another one before I left the hospital. I think what you should really be worried about is when they take the drain out...now that was the absolute worst part of the whole surgery for me. I would pay money to never have to feel that again.

Was it painful? Or just gross?

It felt like the tube was wrapped around my intestines & could feel my insides moving around while they pulled it out. Literally took my breath away. Painful isn't the word. I definitely wasnt ready for it and luckily it only lasted about 10 seconds. Everyone on here says it feels weird...well, yes it does. But it also hurt. I cried. It was the nastiest feeling I have ever felt in my life.

Another person who used the same surgeon as me didn't get the drain. Is it case by case? Or some surgeons use the, cand some don't?

Yes, that is true. All surgeons are different. You should ask your surgeon.

My surgeon doesn't typically use a drain, and the leak test is performed during surgery. The new sleeve is immersed in Water and filled with air--just like checking a bicycle tire for a puncture. Bubbles = leakage.

I asked about a drain, too, and was told he does not typically use them. That being said, I have had 2 C-sections, and I was told that when the surgery takes place, if he sees adhesions that need to be separated from any organs, that could cause a need for a drain. Otherwise, no drain and no post-op leak test. Even if I did have to do a barium swallow or other test, it would be worth it to know I was leak free, though!

My doctor had me focus on breathing in a really deeep breath and then he pulled it out as I exhaled hard.. I didn't feel a thing.

As for the leak test.. tasted less gross than pepto.

Mine tasted like soapy lemon Water and I did vomit quite a bit afterwards. It was dark blood and actually made me feel better. It wasn't a lot of stuff to drink and it was fast!

It wasn't good, but is impressive what you can get through if you have to. I didn't get sick, but it made me feel gross for about 30 min. You can do it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
