Do we ever get used to eatting so little?

Recommended Posts

I love making healthy delicious dinners...but I have to admit sometimes I get dissappointed when I can only eat such a small amt. It tastes so good I want more! I know it's best that I can't and honestly I'm so happy with the results so far...just hoping that with time I'll get used to my little meals and not long for more...

It happens. Truly it is something that you have to work on. The surgery, unfortunately is on your stomach, not your brain. So making those changes won't come just due to having a smaller stomach. You really have to work hard on the relationship that you have with food and eating. Eating quality food over quantity typically makes a big difference. I don't miss pigging out or having seconds at all. When I look back on it now, I understand why I wanted to eat more and can react more appropriately when those feeling crop up. I am not going to say it is easy, but it is controllable. Once you understand the triggers and your relationship with food, it makes managing a whole lot easier. I enjoy the food that I want to enjoy, but I eat like a "normal" person would. I eat slowly and savior every bite. I eat adventurously and creatively and look forward to trying food and food preparations that I have not done before. (I cook for a living).

This is still a challenge at times. but i work on making good choices. If I don't eat my Protein first, I will get hungry really soon afterwards. So i always eat my protein first and little veggies after the protein. If I do get hungry soon, I will have a Guest Protein Bar. IF i try to eat too much, it is uncomfortable..... :)

I'm pretty used to my portion sizes of 4-6 ounces at a meal at two and a half months out. Sure there are times I wish I could eat a bit more of something really tasty.. but it's not overwhelming and I just tell myself I can have it again at my next meal!

BTW, I do have a longer than average sleeve so I can eat a few more bites than many sleevers... maybe that's why I don't really struggle with portion size? I think things would be different if I was only eating a few spoons of something... but being able to eat a little more than a half a cup is mentally quite satisfying to me.

You're doing better than me. When I cook I'm a taste tester so by the time I get to the table I'm full. My family loves the fact that I go busy myself with cleaning.. Which is their job

At 5 months out, I think I am almost use to eating so little. Only about twice a month do I wish I could eat a little more of something. But I am soooooo happy that I am no longer a slave to my cravings and food. I no longer have cravings and can push my plate away without feeling that "need" to clean the plate.

Is this what it feels like to be skinny?

Making into really small pieces really helps me. I can stretch my dinner out to my husbands. For example, I cut 4 adult bites of chicken into about twenty. Sounds crazy but it makes me feel like I am eating a lot more than I actually am and I think has helped me get used to the small portions. It kinds of cracks me up because my plate looks like a babies with baby bites!

I don't know how far out you are, but you will be able to eat more the further out you get from surgery. I am still able to maintain my size 8/10, but it takes work to keep my intake at a minimum. There are a lot of days that I want and could eat more but I don't.

Eating small amounts doesn't bother me. The only exception is when my wife and I Celebrate our 25th in two weeks and we are going to a very special restaurant in Europe with a tasting menu and wine pairing. I guess I'll take a bite or two of each course and save all my wine and champagne for later.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
