10 day post-op cheating :-(

So it has been 11 days almost since I've been sleeved and I have been cheating a lot with the post op diet. I am very hungry and thirsty and I hate sweets so this Protein Shake thing is KILLING me. I have eaten a little bit of egg, stewed chicken, mash potatoes, hummus, yogurt, and rice. I am talking maybe a teaspoon or two MAX. I chew it very well. More than 25 times. I am nursing my 7 month old as well. I take my Vitamins and try and drink Water but I think I am still under 40 oz....am I doing something dangerous? Has anyone else cheated like this? I haven't been weighing myself...I am not eating anything greasy....I just need food...not shakes...not sweet stuff.....does this hunger subside?!

As long as your stomach is handling it fine, it shouldn't be a problem. Just try to get in plenty of protien, watch your calories, and try to get more water!

chicken and rice? Two things that I would really stay away from this soon.. Have you thought about calling your surgeon and discussing your wanting to progress your diet sooner?

I'm surprised they didn't make you wait to have the surgery until you were done nursing! I always hear that expends so much energy and immediately after surgery it seems like it would be hard to "keep up". I agree with Laura-Ven that a call to your surgeon is in order. At this stage it is better to ask for permission instead of forgiveness :-)

Thanks. I got sleeved in Mexico. Honestly the nurses there offered yogurt drink and mango jumex like 3 days post op. Mango in my culture is a big no-no if you have stomache issues....I kinda lost confidence in them :-(

Yes stay away from fibrous fruit.. Like I said chicken and rice are really not good this soon out and can cause problems.. You stomach at this point is still numb, so you really can't tell if something goes down well..

the next stage is purée and should be measured only 1/4 cup at a time.

It night be a good idea to find a nutritionist in your town to help you through the stages..

Honestly, it looks like to me you need increase your Water intake. Once you get in the recommended Water, if you still feel the same then I think you may need to talk with your doctor/surgeon. Please avoid the chicken and definitely the rice (so hard on your stomach at this stage.....or any really). But firstly, I think you are feeling not full/hungry simply because you are not getting in enough water. The water (albeit in Soups, blends, shakes, smoothies, broths, stocks or just plain h2o etc, whatever you're allowed at this stage) will keep your stomach full as needed. Drink it in sips, get it in whenever you can. Include whatever water is in your other meals too. If grazing is you're problem due to hunger. Then try to schedule 3-5 meals a day you know you will/are supposed to have according to your doctors' recommendations according to your nutritional needs. Then just drink water in whatever (preferably sugar free/ fibrous fruit free form) you like throughout the day morning to night and make sure that you get the required amount in each day. I'm confident you will feel too full to care for food (other than mental hunger, but that is something we all need to learn to conquer post-op).

Just try this and let us know how it goes. Of course ask your doctor before you change ANYTHING! :) Goodluck sweety.

oh and p.s.

Take this advice with a serious grain of salt, I'm not speaking from experience here as I have not had the procedure yet. But my suggestions are coming from long discussions with my doctor I've had regarding life post-op, and plenty of accurate resources through my own research. I'm sure that plenty of post-opers on here can agree that what I am saying is sensible, and won't hurt to try to say the least.

No wonder you are hungry when you are nursing your baby! More fluids are paramount in this stage. Try some different brands of Protein shakes to see if there is one you like better. I liked Sobe Water but it is sweet. there are some unflavored Protein powders you could mix into a thin Soup or broth too. Try having some thin cream of wheat or cream of rice Cereal too. But be sure to make it VERY thin. I made mine too thick once and it got stuck and gave me about 2 hours of misery. Also, and this is of course a very personal decision on your part, consider beginning to wean your baby onto some formula.

Additionally, I feel you should know that there are more options out there like donor breast milk IF and only IF you consider weaning. However, my suggestion is initially this that you should talk to your doctor about what you can do to maintain your nutritional needs post-op and also be able to maintain healthy breast feeding, as that is the best thing for your child and honestly something so important shouldn't be so easily taken away from your child IF you may still have the option to breastfeed. Therefor, I suggest you discuss that with your doctor IF you are considering it. Another thing is, breastfeeding will burn a nice number of calories on it's own, so if you do eat (what you are allowed) you may easily be able to lose weight and maintain healthy breast milk for your precious child. I think it all boils down to discussing your options with your doctor. You made it this far breastfeeding, and you're doctor did not have you wean you're child due to the surgery and I'm sure he/she has good reason to let you have that option. Just talk to her/him and I'm sure you can make it work. :)

Hello. I'm a little concerned about your not getting all the food you need for both you and your baby. You said you were nursing? I nursed both of mine and they ate often, I don't c how your body can do that and maintain the proper Vitamins not only that you need but your baby needs. I know that God has made our bodies to be able to be "supermoms" as needed, but still, you had a sleeve and now can't have all that you need. I do pray that you are keeping up w/ both your sleeve doc and your gyn to make sure that both of you are getting properly fed, esp the baby since he/she is depending on what you are putting in your body in order for them to properly grow. Just MHO. good luck:)

Nursing is definitely not taking a toll on baby but it is on my body. This is my fifth kid and thank God I have nursed most of my kids past 2 years. One was even nursed when I lived overseas and was even more malnutritioned. But sincerely thanks for your concern regarding that. I think the Water issue is something thing I definitely have to work on. I have an appt. With a bariactric specialist made. I'm gonna find a nutritionist also. Possibly a therapist to helpe deal with food addiction issues which also might be the culprit.

You are supermom to have done the sleeve while nursing! But, that being said, lots of women get pregnant after they are sleeved so it's not impossible, just very soon after while you are still healing. I found the liquid stage easy on not being hungry but hard on trying to balance the Protein intake and Water with the 15-20-30 rule. I felt like I was watching the clock ALL day long.

Ok girlie, lets talk about what you are eating!!

The chicken is fine to eat, just make sure that it is moist. chicken breast without skin has lots of protien!!

The rice will swell when you eat it, try and stay away from the carbs. They are not our friend.

But the yogurt is really good for you. The highest in Protein is the greek yogurt and that is of course on the menu!!

I also eat cottage cheese and string cheese.< /p>

Try making the baked ricotta cheese bake, the recipe is on here somewhere.

You have to experiment or you will want to pull your hair out, been there done that.

I'm 4 days out. Just sugar free Jello strained cream Soups. I kinda really was angry two days after because of pain. Its getting better. Ive noticed so many things have such high sugar. I know I feel hungry but sticking to this. When can I eat eggs? ?? Cottage chese? Putting myself under a knife I'd hate to sabotage myself... I would love Italian ice but 20g sugar... good luck on your journey.....

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
