Just curious if anybody was required to do a sleep study? I had my first consult with my surgeon today and he ordered a sleep study because I haven't had one before. The thing is, I'm pretty sure I do have apnea. If I get an apnea diagnosis is this going to slow down the surgery process? Right now he said we are looking at early August.

My surgeon didn't require one based on my answers to a questionnaire but when I met my pulmonary doctor, he recommended that I had one to be safe. Apparently, if you have sleep apnea it's harder for you to recover from anesthesia. Turns out I didn't have it but my girlfriend who is getting sleeved has it and has to wear a cpap machine before surgery

alot of insurance company request it the sleep study like all the other test ... I had to do sleep study , EKG , stress test , echocardiogram , endoscopy , psychology evaluation. , physical , blood work , PFTs , I think I forgot something ... The doctor told me of you have sleep apnea it doesn't slow down you process , you just need a little extra like cpap to sleep that's all ... And they need to know that when they put you under for surgery :)

Thanks for answering. I should have asked him but I was kind of terrified and had a thousand other questions. I'm lucky that my insurance isn't really requiring anything other than the psych visit and a letter from the surgeon saying that he feels it is medically necessary. The other things I have to do are required by the surgeon. He is requiring a sleep study, upper GI, nutrition classes and an exercise eval.

Yeah my insurance even asked for 6 month supervised diet by my nutritionist ...before they would accept the paper work ...

I have my sleep study in a couple of week. My insurance wouldn't approve a sleep study in a lab, so I'm doing mine at home. :)

A sleep study will be beneficial if you do indeed have sleep apnea. It gives you one more reason for your insurance company to approve your surgery. I have sleep apnea & I wasn't allowed to use my machine for a full week after surgery, though. The surgeon didn't want to risk air getting into my sleeve.

I have a question... Your doctor would not let you use your sleep apnea machine for a week because of possible air getting in your sleeve? I wonder why my doctor is making me bring my machine to the hospital? Makes me nervous, any thoughts?

I also had to take my cpap machine to the hospital. My doctor required me to use it even the first night after surgery

If there is one thing we all have learned from this site is that "every doctor/program does it differently" don't stress about taking your machine/using it... I think each and every doctor has a different theory to what's best.. But ur trusting yours with your life.. So have faith

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
