Post-op activity

Recommended Posts

Today is my 6th day post sleeve. I was able to walk a mile and a half on an outdoor track this evening. I feel so lame.

How is your activity level going?

You might want to try starting a new thread to get more of a response to your question. Also, when searching older posts I've found the answers to many of my questions. I called my doctor's office A LOT in the first week or so, too. They're used to newbie questions and don't mind taking our calls. Good luck.

I was told strictly rest for two weeks (only frequent brief walks to prevent DVT) and then after that walking only for six weeks. I was recovering fairly quickly but my surgeon was very serious about this point so that's what I did.

I'm two and a half months out now and walking 4-5 miles a day... and just started TRYING to do C25K..(which is WAY beyond my abilities by the way)

Thanks for your input. My doc has said being as active as you can leads to a quicker recovery.

Wow! Some of you are really putting me to shame. I can do 2 miles now, but I'm 6 months post-op. My surgeon was also very insistent on only walking for the 1st 8 weeks. Now I do an hour of yoga 4 days a week and walk 2 miles 5 days a week. My surgeon & nutritionist said that they are very happy that I get that amount of exercising. So, I guess it's different for everyone. Don't push yourself too hard so soon after surgery though. You could really cause yourself some injury & it's easy to dehydrate. So, be careful.

Quite honestly, every doctor has different guidelines. The most important thing is that you listen to your own body and don't push too hard. Rest when you need to and don't overdo it. I've seen people be super active within the first 12 weeks and others who were told to only walk or who can only handle walking. Just do what you can and learn to listen to your body. It will tell you when enough is enough!

I agree every Dr. has different guidelines but walking also helps with the gas pains and bloatiness. I was up and walking and doing to much at 5 days post op and over did it a bit, I had an awesome recovery so far which is 4 weeks Monday. However, if you over do it you will feel it. I actually fell asleep walking a few times and I still get exhausted every afternoon from so much activity.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
