Not getting enough protein or liquids in

Recommended Posts

Today makes two weeks since being sleeved. I was told I should be getting 68 oz of liquids and 68grams of Protein every day. The most liquids I've been able to get in is 38 oz and only 20 grams of protein. I wake up in the morning weak and dizzy . I know I'm not taking enough in,but I constantly feel full . I sip all day long on Protein Shakes , broth, Water, creamy Soups. I feel like its impossible to drink more. I'm kinda freaking out , I don't want to end up in the hospital . I need HELP!!!

I haven't been sleeved yet, but did you EVER think you would ever think those thoughts?!?! The 'getting full' part?

Serious side now, call your doctor and nutritionist and talk to them, tell them how you feel and your fears. They have heard it before and should be able yo calm your nerves and give you ideas to take more of both in.

Good luck!

I'm one week out from being sleeved and the first couple of days were hard. I was meeting my Protein goal but not meeting my Fluid goal. I was only able to get in about 35 ounces. What I'm doing now is setting my timer on my phone for every 4 or 5 minutes. When the timer goes off I take a sip. I figured that this averages 1 ounce per 15 minutes. It also helps that the nurse gave me a bunch of little 1 ounce cups to take home after surgery.

I was totally in your shoes( freaked out daily) ,,i still aim for 48oz of Water and 45 grams of Protein if I go higher thats great. i was sleeved 10 weeks ago. . If you like ice coffee you can get Decaf and put in some unflavored protein ( like a scoop has 24g) in 16 0z of water .. do it 2x a day and you will get in 48g of protein and 32 oz. of water right there. (get a nice flavored creamer). It does get better ,I promise!!! :D

I'm six days out from being sleeved, and yesterday I thought I was going to have to go to the ER from dehydration. You MUST do this - let the Protein go if you have to (you won't absorb the protein anyway if you're dehydrated). One suggestion in addition to the popsicles (SF of course) is the low-fat, low-sodium chicken broth - I actually find that causes me to RETAIN fulid (despite being low-sodium), which is a good thing in this case. Keep a piece of paper handy and tally your ounces, so you can track your progress during the day. Get a shot glass (2 oz) and keep taking shots every 15 minutes. Mix it up with Crystal Light. You have to do this or you will be in the ER. Good luck.

The first weeks post op sipping is a full time job. It really needs to be in your every thought. Get some Isopure or nectar. It takes care of your liquid and Protein at once. If you can get one bottle of that down per day it's 40 grams of Protein and 20 oz of liquid. I don't know of a better combo to get both in.

Start from the time you get up. Sip, sip sip.

You will start to feel so much better when you can more liquids and protein.

Best of luck, the first weeks are hard but it's so worth it!

I'm 6 months out. I still don't hit 64 oz, but I do hit at least 50g of Protein. It's something you must work at

It gets better. Don't worry too much about it right now. Just so the best you can. The fluids and more important than the Protein right now, so work hard on that. Try sipping skim milk all day. I drank 3-4 glasses a day in my liquid stage.

I also added skim milk powder to my Soups and puddings to up Protein too. (I HATE protein powders, and still avoid them.)

Sip all day. It gets better and easier soon!

Went to my two week post-op appointment yesterday and got told I have to get in 40oz of liquids and the same goes for Protein. I've gotten every Protein Shake and powder on the list they gave me, tried them all, most make me feel sick. The ones I can get down only have 15 grams of protein:( I just feel kinda stuck!

The only thing I've found that works for me is to make a smoothie and add flavorless soy Protein Powder. I can't even taste it, and definitely prefer it over whey protein. One scoop (which is only about one tablespoon) is 110 cals and 25g of protein.

I usually use frozen peaches, half a banana, and light juice (10 cals per cup!) with the protein. Really tasty and if you have one for Breakfast, you already got more than half your protein! You can also use milk instead of juice to up it more.

I got the Unflavored whey protein and its nasty. And all the other Protein drinks are starting to taste gross to me too. Where do you you get the flavorless soy protein at?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
