Its post op day 7 for me! I'm having the HARDEST time telling if I'm full or not! I don't want to over do it but I feel hungry and nothing seems to satisfy it! Am I the only one who has experienced this? And how do I cope with it??

SouthernSweetheart

7 days PO and you are still in tact!!!! ;)

thats a positive right there ;)

Many people have that hunger feeling PO (i was lucky and didn't)

i've heard some people say it might be acid/heart burn???

after surgery my doc prescribed prilosec

i take it nightly and never have any prob with heartburn (back when i used to have it bad :( )

but..............

you don't get the full feeling, feeling of restriction from your sleeve til you start on soft food/solids

things will work out

they have to - cuz you are on the right road to a healthier, happier, longer life

keep up the good work

good luck

kathy

Hello! I'm just over 3 weeks post op and the way I think I can tell if I feel full is by a feeling of heaviness when I stand up or a tightness across your chest. Sometimes I get the hiccups which is also a good indication.

I do still get head hunger and sometimes confuse it with real hunger. A good way to know is to have s small bite of something or a drink of Water. If the thought goes away then I generally take that as head hunger. Everyone is different and has different triggers so its hard to generalize!

This was all so helpful ladies. I start my soft diet Sunday so hoping I'll understand the feelings you both described then! I started at 320, surgery day was 313, and as of today I'm 299! So exciting!

I am also a week postop and was just telling my friend how hungry I am. I know I am full when I get a tightness in my chest, but not even 15 minutes later & I am so hungry!!! I feel like I could eat a large pizza (which I know I couldn't literally do)!! Soup isn't cutting it and I have two more weeks of liquids!! I envy those who said they weren't hungry after surgery. My stomach is growling as I am typing this. Pray for me!! lol

hunger is also associated with dehydration.. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids, possibly start taking something for indegestion and keep in mind this will more than likely go away once you start on a reg food diet.. Soft food doesnt cause the restriction that Protein servings of chicken, beef, pork etc

I watched Dr. Alvarez YouTube video online. He is an expert from Mexico and has written a book on Gastric sleeve. He says you won't feel the fullness until you start eating foods because the liquid goes through you so quickly. Sounds like in your case it's 15 minutes. If you watch some of his videos, you will learn a lot about issues like these. They are very informative. The hunger feeling may be stomach acid which can feel like hunger to us. :)

Yes correct about the fluids too ^^^

I had the same problem with feeling like I could eat an entire pizza but its just the liquid phase. It can also be associated with acid in your stomach. Are you taking meds for acid? This can make you think you are hungry too!

Believe me when you get to puréed foods you will be thinking how the hell am I going to fit this in!!!

You all are so awesome! I feel better about it all now. Its strange how every surgeons diet plans are so different!

They definitely do! And in different countries too. I'm in Australia and I have noticed the difference from people surgeons in the UK to the USA to AU.

Just follow your surgeons and dietician/nutritionists guidelines. This forum is not a bible but more for support and of course ask your surgeon all the relative questions too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
