4 days in the hospial after surgery?!?

Recommended Posts

My doctor requires 4-5 days on inpatient stay after surgery. So I'll have surgery Monday the 17th and if it goes perfect he'll only make me stay until the 20th or 21st....anyone else doc require this long of a stay?

I was in for 4 days. It was standard for all VGS patients.

What are you having done? Are you having laparoscopic sleeve? Seems like a lot of time. Can't believe insurance would pay for that if no complications.

Another area that all programs are different in, a lot depends on insurance also. My doctor said 2 days as long as im getting some fluids in.

I was in for 2 days. The doc said that's what I should expect and that's what it was... I'm surprised your insurance would pay for all of that.

Standard? Wow. I went in at 1:00 pm and was out by 10:00 am the next day.

I was in 2 days, but could have stayed longer. I didn't have any issues other than just not feeling great. Most insurance pays on the DRG, not number of days stay, so it's not likely a patient would be billed for a longer stay, other than copays and deductables.

I have tricare and I'm having my surgery done at a military treatment facility in Bethesda Maryland. So insurance isn't an issue. Everything is covered except my food and even that is covered sometimes. I'll also have one hernia repaired. But before I knew that he told me that was standard for VSG for his patients. He took my gallbladder out 3 weeks ago and did a fantastic job! Scars are minimal and I heeled rather quickly.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
