Can anyone who is post-opt gives me some examples of what you ate (drank) after surgery at home? My surgery is Wed. in a city about 3 hours from home and I wanted to have everything I need here so my husband doesn't have to do a bunch of running. From the day you got out and into the non clear liquid phase. I appreciate your feedback.

G2 Gatorade or the calorie free Powerade. Sugar

Free Popsicles, any meds they may give you (pain, nausea) that you need afterwards, broth, gas x tabs (if your doctor says they are okay) although I just walk when I feel gas pain. sugar free Jello.

I am on Clear liquids the first 3 days post - was sleeved on 5/22/13. Then on to full liquids so I have some of this but will plan on shopping for more once I know what I tolerate.

I have lived off of the Gatorade and Popsicles and get pretty close to my fluids in each day.

Also I saw your surgery is 3 hours from home, plan on stopping a few times on the ride home, mine was an hour and 15 min away and we stopped twice just so I could move and help relieve some gas pain. My PT suggested walking around the car once or twice then I'd be good to go.

I had Gatorade G2, 15 calorie Lemonade, Muscle Milk Light chocolate from costco, sugar free Jello brand strawberry and orange Jello, other brand jellos, were NOT good, tasted weird after surgery, chicken broth, plain (no flavor) Protein powder mix, and LOTS of Soup, Tomato, potato, butternut squash. Make sure you have a Protein bottle mix, cup with a whisk in it. You can get them at the health food store, I have 2, one for shakes, and one, to mix, soup, and add the unflavored protein to it. You will need one! Lots of magazines, or books.

Syntrax Nectar is a popular option for Protein powder--the website listed below lets you order a set of 11 samples in your choice of flavors to see what you prefer. Right now, I like the vanilla Creme and the Double Stuffed Cookie flavors; caribbean cooler is also good (tastes like a pina colada). I'm hoping my flavor preferences don't change too much after surgery, but we shall see!

Here's the site, if you'd like to give it a try:

These things literally saved me post op! My favorites were the fruit ones...fuzzy navel, Roadside Lemonade, twisted cherry...no way I could have done just vanilla and chocolate!!

Also - about the car ride, my surgeon said no rides longer than 30 minutes for the first month. I'm assuming that was because of DVT, but would definitely not ride 3 hours straight!

Good luck!

I was told just to make sure and get out and walk around and not make it straight through.

Make sure to have broth or strained chicken noodle Soup. Anything with a salty flavor because you will tire very quickly of all the sweet stuff. Plus I found I tolerated warm drinks better then cold. Also be aware of the possibility of car sickness, especially if you are already prone to it. I am almost 3 weeks out and I still get very car nauseous in the car. Take breaks and keep your head up :) good luck to you!

I had surgery on the 21st and we lived 3hrs away also. Our daughter went with us and drove my husband and I home and the trip took a little over 4.5 hrs. We made several bathroom stops, and we made sure they gave us several bottles of Water for the ride home so we could keep drinking. During the ride home make sure you do ankle twirls and foot pumps you can get some movement even on the ride home

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
