I'm 3 weeks post op. It had been going great, until this week. Over the last 4 days, I have gained 4 pounds! Everyday the scale has gone up by a pound. I'm still only eating about 600-800 calories a day. I don't see how I can gain a pound a day when I'm not even eating that much.

Did anybody else experience that?

Your body will do weird things post op especially at 3 weeks post op. your body is in shock from everything.. Try not to weigh more than once or twice a week.. It will drive you crazy. Make sure your getting enough liquids in too :)

I know it's hard not to think somehow you have the one body that does not respond the same, that you are never going to lose weight, etc. We all thought/think that. You just have to allow your rational mind to be in charge - there is no way a person can gain WEIGHT eating 800 calories a day. It's Water weight, and will come off in a day or two. I'm not going to tell you not to weigh every day, because I never miss a day. I do try to watch the trend week to week to see how I'm progressing, rather than day to day. Everyone fluctuates, and particularly obese people do. Think about it like this - you are losing fat even though your tissues are hanging on to water, so when you shed the water, the scale will show it.

You're right on time! Your body is replacing some of the Water it needs to stay in balance. And 3 weeks is about when this happens (at 2 weeks or 4 weeks for some of us). You have likely depleted your glycogen supply during pre-op and post surgery. Now your body needs to replenish that along with the Water to keep it in solution. Water weighs a lot! Eight lbs per gallon. But it doesn't take up much space so you're probably getting/staying smaller. And if/when you start working out you may gain water weight again. Healthy water balance is critical for your health, do not stress about this!

Stay with the process, you ARE losing fat.

Thanks for the response guys! I guess I'm just going to have to accept the fact that I am in a stall.

I know a lot of people say you shouldn't weigh yourself everyday. So far for me, weighing myself every morning and seeing the weight come off has really given me the motivation to get through the day, and have a good attitude about it.

Yeah stay away from your scale!! It will still come off!! Remember as you become more active muscle will give you some weight and that's good weight

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
