I am failing at my Pre-op diet!! It has gotten so bad that at night time I will take NyQuil just so I can go to sleep and not eat! Am I the only one that is messing up? Wonder how bad it really messes up things for when my surgery comes?

Well, a lot of us mess up. However, the pre op diet is designed to make sure your liver shrinks, AND it begins the mental test to determine if you can handle the liquid phases of the diet post op. You CAN NOT turn back post op, otherwise you could be putting yourself in real danger.

When you write that you are failing... what is going on exactly? Are you drinking good quality Protein? Are you having ENOUGH Protein and Water? Is your craving taking over... what is your craving?

TRUST ME, we ALL have been there. In fact my Dr. said the upper part of my stomach was grotesquely larger than the rest of my stomach. Thanks to my sliding hiatal hernia I now know what lap band felt like. I was starving all the time and ironically constantly eating all the time.

to help you out during this phase..you need to up your Protein in your shakes. Are you taking 2 a day and then a dinner?

If so, you can do what I did and that was drink a 6 oz one for Breakfast. 2 hours late have another 6 oz shake, do the same for lunch, and eat a small salad that is the size of your palm.

Spacing out the shakes really helped me stay full. Also I got a bunch of different flavors to break up the monotony of 1 flavor. SOMETIMES I would add in more shake powder for added Protein and to thicken it up. Other times I would add half greek yogurt to half milk.

Even after surgery I still have hunger it just isn't as bad and I can control the hunger a bit more. Good old pancreas stimulating my grehlin.

everyone different but your body is a funny thing. more times than not hunger is triggered by carbs, especially bad carbs. when we eat bad carbs (sweets, breads, things like pizza, ect...) our body feels satisfied and "comforted" shortly after that them carbs are burnt off and cause chemical reactions triggering feelings of "hunger" so what do we do? eat more carbs. its a never ending cycle that makes us all overweight. if it didnt we wouldnt be here on vst. only advice i can give you is to push through them feelings of hunger. your body will adapt after a couple/few days of knowing your not going to give in and feed it carbs. its sorta like a baby who wont stop crying until someone picks them up. you have to not pick up the baby and teach them that its ok to cry from time to time. might sound like a crude way of putting it but its what you have to do to train your body that its not egtting them carbs/sweets/ect this time. the feeling will go away trust me. :) good luck on everything and dont give up! your surgeon and yourself will appreciate that smaller liver come operation day. :)

I'm doing well on the 3 shakes a day and one meal pre-op diet. The shakes keep me full most of the time, but when i do get hungry and it's not quite time for another shake or the meal--I grab a glass of water! It could actually be your body is starving for Water. The water will usually hold me over til it's time for another shake or the one meal a day I'm allowed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
