PPI has anyone stopped?

Recommended Posts

I am 6 months out and I have decided to stop the omniprazle and see what happens. I did not have heartburn before the sleeve. But 2 weeks after surgery it started. I am trying to get myself off of as many meds as possible. I just stopped Ambien CR 2 weeks ago and am finally able to sleep 4-6 hours a night. It has been a rough go of it but I think the worst is over. I was on it for too many years. Insulin is the one I want off of the most. But it is a slow go for me in that department. Probably should have had the by-pass but was afraid of that one.

I look forward to dropping Rx as well, BUT would suggest that you do this in consultation with your MD!

Gosh I didn't think it was that typical to be on a PPI 6 months out? My doc's normal routine is Prilosec for 4 weeks, I tried weaning off it then and the heartburn quickly came back, went 2 more weeks and tried again and had no issues at all. Never used anything since and haven't even remotely needed anything. I have heard of some people needing them long term but I didn't think it was very common?

I stopped at 3 months and have had no issues. Like you I felt like a walking pharmacy in the mornings! I have a prescription refill left that I have filled for just in case, but I honestly haven't had any problems. But Still consult your doctor.

Decrease the dose slowly so you do not have rebound issues and have to restart the PPI. Try every other day, then if that's ok go to 3 times a week, then 2 times a week. Finally stopping all together. If the acid reflux comes back see your PCP for further follow up.

Well the acid came back. I tried stopping and that did not work. I tried every other day for over a month and that did not work. So I guess in my case the PPI will be a permanent thing. I will try again down the road. I had to sign a disclaimer about this before surgery.

Try again every few months. I was able to stop mine between 4-6 months but there have been periods of time since then where I've had to take one again. Definitely during my pregnancy and also during a really stressful time. I weaned off again (skipping a day between doses) until I was able to stop completely.

I hope you're eventually able to stop taking the meds. Give it a bit more time. It's not unusual to see a lot of people here on them for the first full year.

I've been trying to get off of it for a while, but haven't been successful either. I find without it, I'm on 40 mg, so I think I'll decrease the dose and attempt to wean that way. I took it before surgery, and I was really hoping to not need it. As with anything, the longer things are on the market, the more we learn about their negative side effects.

Prior to the sleeve back when I was still eating wheat, I had horrible reflux. But since giving up wheat I don't have it anymore. I was put on a ppi for 28 days following surgery (two 14 day back to back courses) and was told if any symptoms of reflux came back, to do a 14 day course of the ppi.

I did the 28 days as instructed and have also done ONE 14 day course due to some "hunger-like" feelings which went away when I did the 14 days of ppi. Stomach acid anywhere outside of the stomach is a very serious concern... it's not just about comfort so even though I don't like to be on medication, I understand that it was necessary to do the 14 day course.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
