First Fill Advice: No restriction

Recommended Posts

Struggling not to gain weight after first fill. Second fill is scheduled for Jan 4. I have no restriction whatsoever and haven't had any restriction whatsoever. Scared this won't work for me. Share your own experience with fills and when they kicked in for you and for how long?? Thanks Laura

hi laura...

Dont fret proper restriction didn't kick in for me till after my 4th fill! I have a 4cc band and currently filled with 3.5. I am having another fill this week so i am hoping to get to my 'sweet spot' then. It may take time before you feel the effects...but in the meantime just try to make the best food choices that you can...

I'm going for my 5th fill on Wed. I'm at 2.5 cc in a 4 cc band and have zero restriction. I thought I was really unusual, but I see a lot of people with larger fills than me, so I guess I'm just one of those people needing a larger fill, and my dr. goes veeeeeeeery slow... I'm hoping the next one will help me some.

Good luck to you.

I'm with Becky. I have the 4cc's Inamed low profile band and it took me 3 fills to get to 1.6cc's and I'm perfect right now. I had my 4th fill and went to 2 cc's and was so tight I couldn't eat any meat and pb'd every meal so had a unfill to 1.6cc's and it's the sweet spot for me. Just be patient, you'll get there but don't worry something's wrong you just don't have enough fill yet.

I just had my first fill, and don't feel much restriction. They told me sometimes the first fill absorbs into the dry band anyway, and that the first fill only works if you are really really lucky. I also read on another thread that it's often a good thing that it takes awhile to get retriction because it's such a change, and it's better to have time to adjust to things slowly so there's no panic.

I too have very little restriction with 2 fills on board. I am hoping to hit my own "sweet spot" jan 7th when I go in for a 3rd fill.

Hang in there.

Same here. My doc goes very slowly. Had first fill on 12/13. Just .5cc's. No restriction at all. I have read enough on these boards to see that it is very normal to take a few fills to really get the effect. Hang in there!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem. I go for my third fill this week. The first two fills did nothing for me. The first fill was 1.7 cc's and when I went back a week later the band had absorbed 1 cc so I was down to .7. I got another fill for 1.3 cc's which put me at two cc's and still not much restriction at all, although now I can definitely feel it if I try to swallow something without chewing it well enough, but I can still eat anything without problem. I'm hoping Wedsneday will be the magic fill for me. I haven't lost anything in the last month and was beginning to get worried until I read this.

Just had my 4th fill this past Tuesday 12/19; another 2.0cc to take me to 8.0cc total. And now, finally, three months + post-op, I know what restriction is. A bit scary at first, but very tolerable. I can actually feel the band doing what it's designed to do and that is what I paid a big chunk of money for. I had a minor PB/slime episode at lunch today when I lost track and downed too many bites of chicken in too short a time; I'd read enough threads about PBing to recognize what was happening, but nevertheless it was interesting to say the least.

Hi. My name is also Becky. And I also have had 4 fills and just barely started feeling anything even though I'm not to where I need to be. I go for my fifth fill tomorrow. I also have a 4 cc band. I'm just trying to make it. I am also frustrated that I am 5 months out of surgery and have been white knuckle dieting this whole time. with the exception of the week of my period after my 4th fill. I had restriction then. Not sure why but I sure did love it. Hang in there, it will happen.

Do I need my second fill? If I eat very slowly in the morning, I feel full after 6-8 oz. By lunch I don't feel the restriction, but if I don't chew chew chew, things get stuck and I slime or hurt....don't want to do that again! By 3PM I can eat anything. If I get a fill, how will I eat Breakfast? Do I need a fill or just better behavior?

Betsy, it sound like you definitely need another fill. You should have good restriction most of the day. You will be able to eat breakfast after another fil but it may consist of a simple Protein Shake. Typical for you that the band opens up later in the day. Best of luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
