Hunger after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I keep reading how the hunger after surgery has been really hard for some. I've been on a liquid diet for 8 days now. I had MAJOR hunger the first few days and even had a break down on day 5. Do you think I'll have as much hunger after surgery, or has this liquid diet prepared me? (Clear liquid diet at that.)

I ate like an animal before surgery....After surgery I didn't want to eat for a week, then I felt hungry all the time. It gets better though - you'll just have to hang in there. Good luck.

Hi ya Maurdan

I am afraid it depends on the person...diff people have diff reactions...for myself i was hungry but I drank like it was going out of fashion and it helped...the first couple of days after surgery i didn't really feel like eating.

I hope all goes well.

My doctor didn't have any prediet liquid stage. I ate up until midnight the night before. I found after surgery that my appetite diminished. I get a bit hungrier now but that gets resolved with a fill. Welcome to bandland.

Maurdan

I Was So Excited About Being Banded That I Didn't Even Think Of food For The First Week. Actually I Was The Best With Exercise Also Because I Felt Like I Had A New Toy. It Was Much Easier After Surgery Than Before. I Was Starving Just Before Surgery On The liquid diet. But Like Flabuless Said Above It Does Truly Depend On The Person. Good Luck To You And Keep Us Posted.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
