The best form of protien intake

Recommended Posts

Okay i have been hearing alot about the importance of protien consumtion and it's obvious that you need to be getting it in, my question is....

What is the best form of protien intake??

Is everybody drinking protien shakes? if so, what kind is the best to take (brand)

What foods are best to get your protien in??

and is there a certain time of day that you should get your protien in? (like is morning best?)

and lastly....what is the daily amount of protien you should consume to be sure you are getting the recommended daily allowance??

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

I have been told that you should have about 1 gram per kilo of body weight. (a kilo is 2.2 pounds). so if you weigh 220 pounds you are at 100 kilos. Some doctors use what your Ideal weight should be but I found taht is not everybody opinion. Most men need at least 100 grams. You should spread out your intake throughout the day so you don't overload your kidneys and you will absorb it better. Try to have something every three hours whey and meat Protein are the best.

My Protein goal was set at 89 grams a day. The two best sources of protein for me are:

Quest Protein Bars (20 grams)

Kirkland (Costco) turkey patties (35 grams)

Right now i have been either egg whites in the morning or eating yogurt (fat free, original flavor to cut the sugar) and i mix in granola or grape nuts in it...then between breakfast and lunch i have protien shake made with 1% milk and each shake has 56g protien.

Then i'l eat some avacado for lunch and some more with my dinner plus another shake between lunch and dinner.

I don't eat protien bars but i probably should start, it seems to be alot easier to get my protien in that way.

What brand protien powder is everyone buying?

Animals Protein (including dairy) and soy are "complete". That means they have all of the amino acids you need. Other veg Proteins are incomplete but you will be fine as long as you eat a variety. collagen (which is in those protein "shots") is the lowest quality.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
