Hello, Michigan!

Recommended Posts

I am in Lansing and looking to go through Sparrow Weight Management for my banding. Did anyone look into them? I was just curious as to why so many people went to Port Huron, FLint, Grand Rapids, etc and I'm not seeing anyone who went through SParrow. Is there something I don't know?

I am very nervous about this whole banding thing, but feel like this is my last hope. I have about 120 pounds to lose.

Hi Elvisfan!

There is a Michigan thread here regarding Sparrow:

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f43/lansing-anyone-use-sparrow-49569/

Just research your doctor really good (try looking up your doctor's name on ObesityHelp.com, for starters). You can also use the search option here on LapBandTalk (just look at the thick blue bar at the top of the page for the search).

Being nervous is common! We've all been there. :grouphug: You're starting a new life, and it's a good one if you do your research and understand how to work with the band! LapBandTalk is one of the best forums to get support - if you have any other questions/concerns, always feel free to ask! We have some great Michigan people here :(

Best of luck to you!

I didn't choose Sparrow because of the long pre op requirements. I didn't want to have to wait that long and do their pre op program. My insurance didn't require it, but they do. I was able to get into Hurley very fast. I went to their meeting and they weren't right for me. I have a friend who used them and was happy, but she had to pay for all of the pre op herself.

Your gonna love it. Enjoy your new journey.

Were are you located at? There is a support group out in S.C.S.

over at 11 mile & Little Mack. It's in the church there on the corner.

Meetings are the first Wednesday of the month. If your out this way, or just wanna join a support group. Its there. Shirley

Thank you very much Shirley!! I am right downtown Detroit. Do you have any suggestions on how to get some Protein for the clear liquid diet. Thanks again, Danielle

Hi Danielle!

Good luck with your surgery! There is a drink called Isopure that's sold at GNC stores, it has 40gms of Protein, with no carbs or sugars. It looks like kool-aide and comes in many different flavors . . . but before you try it, be sure to ask your doctor FIRST to see if it's something he/she allows!

Do you have a nutritionist/dietitian you are working with? They can help a lot with your protein needs.

To Shirley (sstasevich) - I'm not that far from the 11 mile/Little Mack area, and I'd love to meet some fellow Michigan bandsters! So the next meeting is on May 7th? Do you know the name of the church? Thanks so much!

Keep in touch Danielle, let us know how you are doing!

Thanks for the info Lori! I will ask my doctor about that. I am self pay so the process has been very quick. I'm sure that at the hospital they will have someone talk to me, but as of now I have not talked to a dietician. How does that Isopure taste? I am still waiting to hear from the hospital about times...I hope they didn't forget about me..lol

Hi Danielle,

I'll be honest! lol I don't think the Isopure is the best tasting stuff, but if you drink it chilled/over ice, then the taste improves. You just need to find the flavor you like . . . I enjoy the Mango and the Punch. I'm drinking some right now, as I just had a fill yesterday and I'm on liquids for 24 hours.

I hope you have a time soon for your surgery! Will you be staying at the hospital overnight?

Yed do I have some protien drinks for anyone interested.

Go to ebay, and type in Muscle Milk Light, you are not gonna believe how many dealers and flavors there are. Look for a guy who sells them as many as you want shipping only $4.99. He also will have some gold stars by the best tasting product. This is who I recently bought from.

"I can't think of his name, but he's there!" About $18.99 a jug. Only 2 scoops 2 a 8 or 10 oz. shaker bottle of Water, and your done. 195 cal.25g. protien. Thats good stuff. H.F.H. recomends that to all of us.

You check it out, then check out what a GNC will charge you. Thats the only stuff I drink, I must have 5 flavors to choose from. good luck shopping. It is a Lutheran Church Beth Lutheran? don't hold me to that, it's the only church on the corner of Frasho Rd. & Little Mack. S.E. side. Parking in the back, meeting downstairs, and starts aroun 6:00 or 6:30. Depends on the people. Come and join us, it is for support, it's not to bad. Sometimes even interesting. People who have reached ther goals, people waitin to get banded, "and looking for advice." and the rest os us tring to get there. So its not to bad. Look forward to seeing you. Shirley..

Thanks Lori! I went to GNC tonight and picked up a couple of bottles...I needed some kind of Protein, kindof a rough day on all Clear Liquids. The hospital called finally, and moved my surgery up to 7am so I am very relieved that I don't have to wait all day. Yea!!!my day is finally here.

Thanks for the tip on the Muscle Milk Light Shirley! I would never have thought to check eBay. It sounds good, it would be nice to have something different. And thanks for the support group info! It sounds like fun, I'm gonna try and make it to the next one. Looking forward to seeing you too!

Danielle (you're prolly sleeping for your big day tomorrow as I write this!) :blushing: just keeping you in my prayers for a smooth and successful surgery tomorrow! Please write and let us know how you are doing when you are up to it.

Hi elvisfan:

If you've read through the thread, then you know most of my experience. The staff is caring and professional. Any bumps have been resolved quickly and to my satisfaction. They do require the 4 week pre-op and 4 weeks post-op clinics and classes. I found them to be very helpful. Pre-op, they & other clients answered a lot of my questions. Post-op, it was very reassuring. One of the pieces I really like about the program at Sparrow is the fact that they do such a great follow-up program. I know that I'm going back in 3 months, 6 months, and annually for 5 years. One of the other benefits to the program, in my opinion, the staff (medical, behaviorist, exercise physiologist, etc.) are all available for private appointments if I need them. Good luck with your decision. Let me know if there are any other questions I can answer.

Well I made it through!!! After I left the hospital I spent the weekend at my parents, they don't have internet (yes they live in the ice age) so I couldn't let you know how things went. The first couple of days sucked but I am feeling much much better today. Lots of discomfort in the port area, I feel a burning tugging feeling when standing up. My stomach is still very bloated, I hope to God it is going to go down soon. I haven't weighed myself figured it would be pointless considering I think that I am retaining all the liquids that I have consumed in the last week. Well thanks for all the support and I will keep you posted.

Take care everyone,

Danielle

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
