brandnewbie 42 Posted May 21, 2013 I admit I don't get why people choose not to follow doc's orders on the pre-op diet. I know I'm very new to this forum and this will likely get me burned at the stake. This isn't about me judging others, but instead trying to understand their reasoning. I am 39 and have likely been under the knife more than most people my age and I have never considered going against my doctors pre-op orders. I am certainly not perfect, but considering the importance of optimizing your health prior to incision time, I just don't understand why you would jeopardize your surgery and your complication odds after you've obviously made the empowering choice to change your lifestyle. Yes I see the irony considering doctors tell you to live healthier day to day and I find myself here, but point blank orders pre-op I don't mess around with. No game 14,437 Posted May 21, 2013 And some kids stick forks in and because of dumb luck don't get hurt, and then go and tell others look I messed up and I'm still alive! Really I get "cheating" because none of us are perfect especially when it comes to food.. But I would be careful about enabling others just because you lived through it or weren't turned away after the doc opens you up and finds a mess. 9 kckitty, Dallas Curvy Girl, brandnewbie and 6 others reacted to this
*Dean* 1,594 Posted May 21, 2013 Hi Laura!!!!!! :) OP I know what your saying, but we're all different and our struggle is the same but different. For me what you're saying is sort of akin to a lean person asking why fat people don't stop eating so much. 2 OKSleever and mistysj reacted to this

*Dean* 1,594 Posted May 21, 2013 Life's good Laura! Started in a new area at work, after 5 years where I was. It's strange working somewhere where people only know you as looking proportionate. Love the BMI on your ticker!! How are your mob??
stacechase 251 Posted May 21, 2013 brandnewbie, I totally hear you. Personally, I am just staring my journey here (likely will have surgery on August 19, but still hasn't been submitted to the insurance yet). I feel that if you're going to go through such a life-changing procedure, you mine as well get started following the rules as soon as possible to better prepare yourself for a new lifestyle! That being said, I think these boards are a great place for people to come to relieve their burden if they make a mistake, or fall off the wagon, etc. because people here truly understand how difficult it can be to change food habits that you've developed your whole life. I don't want to think about the fact that I will likely have some small setbacks, but the reality is that it could very well happen. Really, I thank the people who have the courage to admit when they've messed up, because it 1) makes me feel like we're all human and in it together and 2) that I can understand what setbacks may be coming to further prepare myself for success. 3 nervousnellie, *Dean* and brandnewbie reacted to this

tigerbelle 328 Posted May 21, 2013 I think Dean said it accurately when he compared it to a lean person asking a fat one why they eat so much...I think we have come to the general conclusion that most of us chose WLS because we realize we have a problem with eating...just because surgery is looming does not mean the person magically gains control of their eating habits...I was fortunate that my dr didn't require a pre-op at all--just fasting the day before as with any surgery...I have often said that I am not sure I could have done a 2-week pre-op liquid diet; it was extremely difficult to do it post-op
brandnewbie 42 Posted May 21, 2013 Sorry I don't know how to do the quote thing yet. I don't agree with the lean person analogy and find it an unfair comparison. It isn't the same thing. Falling off the wagon is understandable and being able to admit it and move on is admirable. But there are times when falling off the wagon should simply not be an option. Why do people place more importance on post op orders than pre-op ones? I don't imagine people would try to justify eating things they shouldn't within the early weeks post-op. I can speak from experience and I am just trying to understand the logic in the moment that determines the decision to stray.
brandnewbie 42 Posted May 21, 2013 Tigerbelle I don't believe in magic, I believe in effort. I have been eating like crap for almost 15yrs. I was diagnosed with Diabetes on March 12th, so I get how hard it is to change old habits. That doesn't change the fact that I haven't had any crap since that day. Hard as hades yes, but the alternative is not an option. It takes tremendous strength to decide to have WLS. I commend that choice, I just don't understand why those same people don't recognize that strength in themselves sooner than later.
