Couldn't believe how much this surgery cost when I saw the amount billed to my insurance plan! (Luckily my insurance should cover all of that) Wondered what others have paid...

I am self pay and I am paying a total of $8700.00 however I am going to Mexico. I priced it here in my area and the least price I got was $16,500.00 and that wasn't including anesthesiologist. I did research the Dr's for over a year before deciding on the first Dr I found.

I was just sleeved two weeks ago as a self pay patient in Nebraska. The total will be about $14,500. That includes the hospital, surgeon, anesthesiologist, radiology, and lab. The largest cost to the hospital is $10,000 and they have a program that lets me pay just $150/month. There is no way I could have done it otherwise.

Good topic! I was just wondering about this question myself. When I finally made the decision to go ahead and pursue this surgery, I was shocked to find out how much it cost here in Denver, CO. My insurance won't cover this at all. I was quoted $17,500 for the sleeve. The doctor came highly recommended by my best friend and her sister. And when I went to his free seminar I found out he had only done 163 sleeve's. Are you kidding me?! I knew there was no way I could pay that price. And I was so heartbroken. Then I started doing research and found out that I could have 2 very qualified and very experienced surgeons in Mexico do my surgery for $4,700 all inclusive with hotel and transportation, food, etc. Not including airfare. Each surgeon has over 2,000 sleeve surgeries under their belts. Now tell me that's a no brainer. I will be sleeved on July 9, 2013.

I added up all of the claims on my insurance website that were related to my surgery (hospital, surgeon, anesthesiologist, pathologist) and not counting any of my pre-op visits, I was right around the $40k mark. I am also in Fairfield County, CT where everything is expensive... Thankfully my insurance covered 100% after my $3000 deductible.

Well I am having to dispute a claim with UHC currently because they denied one of the surgery charges for 4300 even though they said it should be covered because I was preapproved. Now they are resubmitting it.

Since I met my $1100 out of pocket max already I won't have to pay anything. I consider myself very fortunate and TOTALLY understand why Mexico is a good option for those who self-pay.

4700. For everything including: two nights in hospital, three nights at hotel and all meds. This was in Mexico. I had excellent care.

I would go to MX even if I was covered by insurance in the states. But.. That's another story aside from the OP ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
