Either ignore them or come back with your own...such as, I know Susie's 2nd cousin's stepson's ex-wife's brother lost a leg due to complications from diabetes due to obesity.

But even better, be assertive for YOU. Simply tell them you've done the research and this is a decision you're making for YOURSELF. YOUR risk, YOUR choice, YOUR life. There's risk in EVERYTHING we do. The risks in staying obese are also known and very real.

See yourself as a individual ..don't compare yourself think positive kno that there are complications but if it out weigh your health go for it it's not an easy choice but think who are u doing this for I'm four months out and I've heard them all and those same ppl are happy for me ( I think )

You will find that they are more of "urban legends." First, ask for an actual name. Say that you'd like to talk to the person and learn more. Chances are they don't even know a name. It's just a rumor, like razor blades in Halloween candy.

Second, the chances are that even if it is true, the person had a different surgery than VSG. There are just not a lot of VSG patients out there yet.

Third, time is on your side. Surgical techniques and nutritional info have gotten better and better. The first heart operations were extremely risky too, but now in most cases they are relatively routine.

You can thank them for their concern and say you will take it into consideration, but that you are confident with your choice and your surgeon. You can say that the risks of staying obese are greater than the risks of the surgery. Most often, it is true!

Read this site!

Yes, there are stories where people have had problems but it would be a surprise if everyone sailed through. But look at the stories of people further down the track and the majority are leading lives that are healthier and happier than before.

I had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic - but that was more than weeks ago and all the good stuff that has happened since far outweighs a few bad days to start with.

Keep yourself informed using the site so u have answers to all the negative naysayers and to any concerns u may have yourself. Alternatively smile at them, make all of sorts of noises that sound as if u r listening but tune them out while all the time thinking that this is your life to be lived as you see fit and that the only point of view that matters when making the decision is yours.

Good luck!!! X

Man, urinating out the left ear! That would have come handy the times I was stuck in traffic jams and my kidneys were busting. Roll down the window...aaahhh!

Ya, every time I have told someone about sleeving they have known of someone who knows of someone that gained it all back or had big complications.

It comes with the territory I guess.

My family always has negitive comments too. Then I go and read things on the internet and freak myself out.... You just have to go with what you want...I was kinda leaning toward not getting it and now Im glad I did it!! I am almost a month out and have not had any problems!! hopefully it will stay that way..just listen to your doctor...Good luck

im not at all worried about the procedure or anything like that, in fact i cant wait! i have a great bariatric surgeon at a grade a+ facility. i just dont understand why theres always the "debbie downer" in every group? i guess theres always the experts out there no matter what the surgery is, just gotta give them their minute to speak and ignore what they may say lol

Well, think of it like this. Their reactions to your upcoming surgery are out of love and concern for you. Could they have supported you in a better way? of course. Medical science has come a long way since the WLS first introduction in the 50's and with that their is new found knowledge of what to do.

YOU are NOT that person and you have no idea what that medical person's underlying circumstances were. EVERYONE is different and this surgery affects each of us differently.

Dr OZ said it best when he stated that the benefits of the surgery are far greater than the risks associated with obesity.

LoL - no horror story here!!! I have been on board and excited since I woke up in recovery!!! Never a problem, never, ever buyer's remorse!! It may be because I was healthy and had no medical issues.....but I had an easy time....I also had an over the top positive attitude!!!! You'll do fine and I'd bet money you're going to LOVE being sleeved. (have you had surgery??) One year later, you won't believe how different your life is!!!

When people ask me about mine they always lnow someone who had THAT surgery. And when I dig deeper I find it was gastric bypass. So I explain mine is different with less risks and stuff and then they are cool. They dont want to research anything and go by hearsay anyways.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
