This was nothing at all for me, filing out the paperwork took longer than the actual visit and I met with a social worker not even a psych. Mine just mainly went over the paperwork I had filld out and those questions were just general questions about your over all health why you want the surgery and asked if I had a support group he is actually the one that told me about this site. It was a very pleasant visit nothing at all to be nervous about and I didnt feel like I was being judge. Good luck to you it will be fine.

Sure thing, I had my psych eval last week! It went well. The doctor will get a general sense of your health history, family health history that may affect your genetic pre-disposition for obesity, and mine asked questions about what my "trigger" foods are (I'm a sugar freak)! He also wanted to make sure that I understood that the surgery is a lifestyle change, asked how much I would ideally like to weigh (he said some people go WAY too low, and he needs to make sure that people are realistic with their goals).

I was unsure as to what to expect, but it went well. You'll do great! :)

The psych appointment should be a breeze if you are mentally stable person. They want to assess that you can realistically handle the emotional issues that come with such procedure.

My experience was pretty much the same; I filled out a questionnaire about my eating habits/challenges, and talked with the counselor for a while about my history with weight loss--what I had tried, why I hadn't been successful. It was very open, honest and not judgemental at all. The counselors who do these appointments have (most likely) dealt quite a bit with WLS patients and know how to make sure you understand the risks and what it means to be sleeved. More than likely, these are all things you've thought about well in advance, and you won't be in for any big shocks. ("What do you MEAN, I can't gorge myself on _____________/smoke three packs per day/drink a liter of whisky/participate in the Iron Man Competition a week after surgery?!" :o )

It'll go great--just be honest with the counselor and with yourself about your history and your expectations of what this surgery can and can't do for you. Good luck!

I talked with the psychologist for about 30 minutes. He was just making sure I knew about the surgery and was prepared for everything. Also went over past weight loss attempts and failure. Then, I had to take a true/false questionnaire...was like 400 questions.

It wasn't bad at all. I stressed about it for nothing. You'll do fine....just be honest with them. :)

Good luck!

I had a different experience. I was told I was mentally stavle and seemed to know exactly what I was getting myself into, but I had to do a full psych eval which was a serious of three bubble-answer tests that repeatedly ask you the same questions worded 5 different ways. She then evaluated that I did not feel like I had a strong enough support system and required 4-5 counseling appts. They then wanted that counselor to write a letter saying she KNEW by my bosits that surgery would be a success. She wouldnt say that because you just never know. So she told them I knew what I was doing and I am persistent. They accepted that. But even though it took awhile, I found a great counselor who I like! She has no agenda and it is nice to have someone be excited for me....

My visit was about an hour long and she wanted to make sure I understood this surgery is not a magic fix but a tool. We talked about family history, eating patterns (I usually eat when I'm stressed ) and what can do when I feel stressed that doesn't involve food. It was a very helpful visit for me because I was made aware of behaviors that led me to gain weight and how I can deal with them when they come up after the surgery. Good luck !

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
