Nervous about surgery in Mexico

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery at at the end of February in Mexicali. I found the standard of care at the hospital to be excellent. Dr. Aceves did a great job and fixed my hernia as well. I think you need to do your research etc. I chose a hospital that provided more care because I am 50+ and figured I might need it. Anyway... only good things to say about my experience.

So please tell me how was your experience with Dr. Aceves, I'm thinking of going to him if united healthcare starts to trip out (lol)

I had the same issues Jenna' date=' I was terrified .. I actually canceled and got my money back once before I finally went through with it.. and I thank God every day that I did. It is different, I am not going to sugar coat it. 10 of us in a van pulling into a strip mall to have major surgery.. I was in a full panic attack.. until I went inside.. there it was a crisp clean medical clinic, very nice people, very friendly, We all 10 had our surgeries that day/night and we all did very well.. I personally had to travel from the hotel to the clinic for check ups.. I would rather stay in a hospital and not do the travel if it was an option .. also there is no delivery of the pain medication.. you only get it in your iv when you drive back to the clinic. Most of us suffered from gas pain more than anything else.. some of the girls looked like they had not even had surgery and felt great.. they were smaller in size if that matters or not im not sure. But all in all, I knew it was cheaper for many reasons and My Doctor did a fantastic job, I have not had any issues what so ever with my surgery and one of the ladies that had surgery with me was checked out in the States when she returned home.. the Doc said " well, he knew what he was doing, that is for certain" . My cost was 4,500 , safe, clean, caring, very nice hotel, popcicles a plenty, free broth from the kitchen.. I would do it over and over and over again.. I do plan to return next year to get the flab removed lol[/quote']

Wildflower if you don't mind, who did your surgery?

Have you spoken to surgeons in the U.S.? I ask because I also thought the same. After the surgeon my PCP referred me to denied me, I decided to shop around. So, I spent the $500 to consult w/ two surgeons in the U.S. I was shocked that while the cost for the surgeon was comparable to MX, it was the hospitals that blew it out of the budget. A min deposit of $20k for one night in the hospital was insane and made me sad. There's something wrong with our healthcare system.

If cash paying patients can't get a discount in our own country, it forces us to go elsewhere for medical care.

Just make sure you have a board certified surgeon. I chose one that is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

I was a little worried also. Mine is this coming Thursday, but reading up and researching I feel ok. I took all of my info to my dr and he checked it all out and told me the benefits outweigh the risk and to go for it. He wants to see me 30 days after surgery. He is coding it something to do with diabetes, which I have. He said it does have something to do with it. He's watched me struggle the last 20 years with my weight.

I am scared about going to Mexico for surgery, but then I think I should be scared. This is major surgery. I did the best I could to research the surgeon, but it kind of scares me that no one on the two support sites i've joined have this particular surgeon. I e-mailed Placidway for information and a rep from Hospital de la Familia called me and talked to me about the surgery. I did see some complaints about Placidway regarding plastic surgery, but i'm really not working with them. I made all my arrangements thru Hospital de la Familia. Anyway, I got the plane tickets and the date and if everything really ends up to be as I have been told. 5 days in the hospital and 3 days at the 4 star hotel. I do feel good that i'll be in a full service modern hospital.

I've decided to go for the surgery in Mexico. I'll be having surgery with Dr. Q on July 3rd! So nervous but excited. I've been struggling with weight for as long as I can remember and the risk is completely worth it to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
