high protein tofu from trader joes

Recommended Posts

Just tried the high Protein tofu from trader Joe's. It's 14 g p for about 3 oz.and it's very firm which keeps it from falling apart. Also marinated it in their soyaki marinade. Really good!

I understand that tofu tastes like whatever it is marinated in, but what is the texture like? I am so scared to try it when it is my time.

I really like the texture of tofu. It's firm, but smooth and soft. Contradictory? Yes. I really like it pressed, sliced into 1/2" slices, and marinated in soy sauce, garlic, and hot pepper flakes, and then pan fried until it becomes darkened. Then top it with a little reduced marinade mixed with orange juice, a little brown sugar (or honey or agave), and grated ginger. Yummy!

You can also lightly coat it with corn starch before putting it in the frying pan to give it a bit of a crust when it cooks.

High Protein tofu? I'll get some! I love tofu anyway. For those who haven't used it, here are some easy things to do. Also, tofu comes in several forms: silken/soft (good for plain eating or blending), firm or extra firm (good for keeping it's shape, like grilling).

  1. Serve it very cold with soy sauce sprinkled over it and some chopped green onions or chives.
  2. Throw it into anything with Tomato sauce. You can break it up, blend it, or leave it in 1" to 1/2" chunks. The sauce completely flavors it.
  3. Fry it as described above.
  4. Marinate it in light Salad Dressing for 1/2 hour and broil, grill, or fry it. Also good in a kebab with veggies.
  5. Put cubes of it in stir fry with veggies.

Dry fry?

To dry fry, I cut up my tofu and SLOW fry it with no oil or butter on a non stick griddle or you can use a cast Iron pan. I fry it on a lower heat to get the moisture out and crisp it up. I buy mine at trader joes (extra firm) Also after you dry fry it you can do different things with it...like marinade in anything (it is tasteless so will soak up any flavor) and stir fry with veggies I like it marinaded sometimes but I will also eat it just straight from the fridge cold after dry frying it

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
