I feel broke and stupid!

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 5-13-13 so I am new to all of this. I feel stupid because I don't understand how much I should be taking in at one time. I understand sips and if I go to fast it hurts. How long should it take me to drink a cup of broth? ? Is it normal for me to drink a cup (8oz) in one setting? Broth, tea, and flavored water go down well and I can do a cup fairly quick. Not that it's a race, but I have always drank fast. I don't pay attention and next thing I know I'm done. Now my Protein Shakes are not so easy and my Unjury chicken Soup is the same. It has to be small sips and not to quick or I get the sudden knot of pain between my boobs at the top of my stomach. Just the smallest sip gives me that pain at times. I try to get my Protein in and my shakes are 11oz and out of habit try all in one setting.... I feel broken because I can take a large amount of other liquids. I asked my husband "what if my sleeve is bigger than it should be" I feel that I don't know when to stop and what if I stretch my sleeve. I don't know what is enough and i try to force my 64 liquid and 60 protein. I do fine with Popsicles, but Jello was extremely painful after each bite. I call it gas pains, but not really sure what it is. I go Monday for my 1 week follow up.

Don't feel stupid by any means. This is all new to you, and the whole process is a learning curve. I'm almost 8 weeks out and still figuring out what and how much to eat and drink. It's really all about listening to your body, which is exactly what you're doing. The first few days especially, worry more about Fluid intake than Protein. You're lucky to have a one week follow up - my first visit wasn't until 3 weeks. They got a few phone calls from me, and I spent a lot of time here. Just take it slow and steady, and you'll be fine!!

It's great that you are getting lots of liquids in! Don't worry, you probably won't start feeling "restriction" until you start eating actual food (purees & solids) for the first week or 2 the most important thing is fluids to avoid dehydration, if you can het the Proteins in that is good, but don't stress if you can't (also remember the Fluid proteins count as fluid) please don't be discouraged, everything you are experiencing sounds totally normal :)

I would say, at this point, that you just need to continue to eat...errr...drink mindfully right now. Even if it's habit to drink quickly, make an effort to slow down. It's a habit (slowing down) that will be GOOD once you start on thicker liquids and move into solid foods. Many people eat WAY too fast. Try not to think of your Protein Shake as a meal (to be consumed all at once) but as something you sip on throughout the day. Same for other liquids and your Water. Small frequent sips are the key....which is like when you start eating solids. Then, you'll be taking small bites, chewing slowly and well, then pausing until the next bite to "feel" how well it went down or how it makes you feel.

I had my surgery on Wed 5/15/13 and the nurse gave me a little 2 ounce medicine cup. That's how I take my drinks in that little cup so I can remember to take little sips! Works for me:) Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
