glostaff 40 Posted May 18, 2013 I am 2 1/2 months post surgery. I am still eating too fast. I can't make myself slow down and take small bites. Then after eating I end up with a stomach ache or throwing up. Does anybody have any ideas or tips for me?
LouiseC 1,031 Posted May 18, 2013 You may be doing these things already but here is what has helped me. Sit down to eat, at a table preferably. Put cutlery down between bites. Focus on chewing. Turn the television off, the distraction leads me to eat mindlessly. Practice being mindful at every meal.

Or just count... Every time you put food in your mouth count to 25-
zempress 4 Posted May 18, 2013 I focus mentally on digesting it in my mouth or liquefying it before swallowing. I know one person who used to set a countdown timer on her phone and chew each bite for a predetermined number of seconds until she picked up the behavior. Good luck
LiggleLiggle 84 Posted May 18, 2013 If you have an iPhone or ipad there is a program called "eat slower". It makes a sound when you can take a bite. You set it for whatever length you need to. I used it a lot until I was out about 5 weeks. 1 jusjay reacted to this

lsereno 2,525 Posted May 18, 2013 I used a clock with a second hand. Chew small bite for 30 seconds. Swallow. Wait 30 seconds. Repeat. Don't stress that it will be permanent. At two years out, I eat as fast as I ever did. Lynda
Tim H. 168 Posted May 18, 2013 I am 2 1/2 months post surgery. I am still eating too fast. I do the same exact thing. I guess it's just habit to shovel in food as fast as I can. I'm going to take some of the tips in this thread and hopefully do better.
