Hard getting water down?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on March 19th and the first month was fine. Now for the past 2 weeks I have had a really hard time getting Water down. When I take a drink it upsets my stomach. I really have to take small sips and because it upsets my stomach I have been trying to avoid water. I was wondering if anybody else has had this problem? It doesn't bother my stomach when I have a Protein Shake.< /p>

try adding some mio drops, or kool aid now makes the same type thing, only sugar free, and it actually tastes like kool aide. I had trouble with just plain Water for a while, but adding some flavor to it made a huge difference! Another thing i did was to buy popsicle molds, and just fill them with water, and that helped big time in getting my water in. Good luck!!

I had trouble with Water too but come to realize that its wasnt just water, it was cold water. My surgeon suggested warm liquids because some patients sleeves spasm when they consumed cold water so I started on warm tea and bingo, I was able to get my liquids in. Im almost 6 months out and still prefer warm beverages to cold. But even room temperature water isnt appealing, I do have to add some kind of flavoring.

I had my surgery march 19 also. I also have a hard time with the Water intake . I am try for 6 glasses a day (struggle). Its like a job and i hate it. I use Decaf ice coffee alot (I add Protein in it ). I do some crystal lite also . It just seems theres not enough time in the day cause when I eat i dont want to drink for hours cause i am so full. also try some warm drinks herbal teas and decaf hot coffee. I hope it gets easier. By the way how you doing with the protein ,,since we are sleeved the same day wanted to know how thats goin for you ?

Ok this is from member maharet111 I always like her answer so I copy and paste it to these questions.

Okay a little science here as told to me by my surgeon. Water has a high surface tension, meaning that its barrier to allow it to be broken down is hard. Think of a steel paper clip that floats on the surface. Now your stomach is like the size of a coffee stirrer at this point due to swelling etc. because of the high surface tension it is hard sometimes for the Water to be absorbed and gets kind of backed up if that makes sense. So when you dilute water or mix it with something if breaks that high tension and thus can be absorbed faster. Not everyone experiences it but it is one of those side effects that can happen.

Thanks Laura! That explains a lot. I was sleeved 3/25 and was a big Water drinker prior to surgery. I've only been able to start drinking plain water about a week ago...til then it was all crystal light, sobe or Vitamin water.

Thanks for the good advice...I have been doing great with Protein. I average 40-60 grams a day but Water is my struggle. I feel the same way about hours in a day. It seems like not enough hours in a day to drink fluids since I am sipping such small amounts still.

How does everybody feel about coffee? I was a big time coffee drinker before and was mourning my coffe the first month 2 weeks ago I tried again first time since surgery. I love my coffe but I also love with cream and sugar. I know that's not a good choice but what is a girl to do?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
