Has anyone here gotten a prescription for "Atenolol"? 202 weeks before and after surgery? This medication is a Beta Blocker.

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to have my surgery on Thursday May 30, 2013.

I was prescribed a "Beta Blocker" to be taken every night for the next 2 weeks before surgery and for 2 weeks after surgery. What is the purpose for me taking a beta blocker before surgery?

My blood pressure is normal, leaning more towards the lower end of normal. I have a rapid heart beat.

I'm confused as to what this is going to achieve for my situation?

I start my 10 day pre-op liquid diet on Monday, May 20, 2013.

Help!!!!

If you have a rapid heart beat its my understanding the beta blocker will help slow it down by blocking the effects of stress hormones.

I'd contact your surgeon and double check so you feel better!

I already take Atenolol for my blood pressure, but an effect of it is to lower your heartrate. I'm guessing that's why they gave it to you, but I agree with the other person that if you have questions, you should ask the doctor.

PS - my resting heart rate used to be around 80, and is now about 60.

Hi Theresa- beta blockers not only will slow down and regulate pulse, but are cardio protective and will protect your heart. Your doc is probably just using it to slow you down a little. (I am a pharmacist...that can be seen often with surgeries)

I have been taking Atenenol for my rapid heart beat for 20 years. Took it right before surgery & had it the next day without missing a day. Your heartbeat needs to be in a normal range I would imagine for surgery. Then again, if your having surgery for a bad heart I don't see how it can be in normal range. My point is, it's a very mild beta & don't worry....best of luck to you!

attenolol is also used for anxiety. Anxiety is normal and generally increases in the days prior to surgery. This will help with that, as well as a back up plan to keep b/p in check as it also can rise with anxiety/stress, and surgery adds stress to your body.

I had talked to the bariatric nurse and she said the reason they prescribed me the medication is so my heart beat slows down. Now I don't feel bad about having to take a beta blocker.

Tomorrow I will be starting my liquid diet (Monday May 20, 2013) after I wake up. I am on a night shift schedule. My liquid diet will be until my surgery date of Thursday May 30, 2013in the morning.

After surgery I will continue to be in a liquid diet.

Thank you everyone for your support! I wish everyone here good luck on their weight loss journey!

I took this for high blood pressure, very briefly. It made me pass out. I think it popped my blood pressure too low.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
